Manson discovered Scientology in the late sixties in San Francisco, and over about 2 years he spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars on Scientology courses and auditing sessions. After Manson's arrest and conviction for mass murder, he began to feel that Scientology was a scam, and he demanded a refund. Scientology officials refused to accept Manson's calls and letters. Manson instructed one of his loyal followers (Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme) to infiltrate Scientology and get to Hubbard himself. Within 4 months, Fromme had worked her way up the ranks and was in daily contact with him aboard his Sea Org Flagship. In early 1974, Fromme tricked Hubbard into making and recording this phone call, by claiming that Manson wanted help and could be easily persuaded into buying more auditing sessions. Hubbard was caught off guard when Manson immediately became hostile and began threatening to kill.
