Child sexual abuse cuts across all economic, racial and social lines. Children are abused by professionals, day laborers and almost every other class of individuals. There are a number of causes for child sexual abuse, but stress has been identified as a primary factor in all causes. "Everyone does not sexually abuse their children although everyone has the propensity to do so. There has to be certain stresses in a person's life to make them sexually abuse children," says Delores Butler, director of the Children, Youth, and Families program at the Lloyd C. Elam Mental Health Center of Meharry Medical College. Butler received a master's in social work from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She has worked with the Tennessee Department of Human Services, and for the last eight years has worked in a project for men who offend children. "About 50 percent of them were sexually abused themselves," she says. "And there is some impulse control problem with such persons." (less)
