- Description : Here's a clip of previous iDIDJ Aus...(more)tralia artist-in-residence, Darryl Digarrnga Brown.
Darryl is playing a solo piece here, at the Darwin Festival '07. Widely regarded as a 'Master Blaster', Darryl continues the long line of expert mago players in his family, having learnt the art from his grandfather the late David Blanasi. Blanasi was recognised as the greatest exponent of the mago by fellow countrymen and was hugely respected by didgeridoo aficionados throughout the world.
The mago used by Darryl is one made by another previous iDIDJ Australia artist-in-residence, Banyawarra. This particular mago has done the rounds, having enjoyed community use in parts of Arnhem Land.
'Pullers' from Ramingining, Lake Evella, Maningrida, Goulburn Island, and the Cox Peninsula have laid lips on this mago, and the judgments have been unanimous: it is a little ripper!
The entirely natural termite-eaten bore is a wonder to behold, and the sound that emanates from it sublime. 'Dhit' flicks of the tongue produce sharp, crisp accents amid a warm, full-bodied acoustic with strong mid-tones. There's plenty of shades of sound in this little beauty, with an especially nice tension between dark murky boominess and piercing high frequencies.
The subtle notes that are produced when idling in the mid-range is fantastic, as the slightest movement of the tongue creates a sonic vortex that either pulls towards the bass notes or ascends into the high end harmonics. This feeling of super-responsiveness is rare in mago instruments, and squarely places it in a special category all of its own. (less)
