- Description : In 2008, the 275th anniversary year...(more) of Georgia's formation, General James Edward Oglethorpe was honored as the founder of this American colony in February 1733. He also greeted the first forty-one Jewish settlers of Georgia on July 11, 1733. Their arrival occurred as Savannah was experiencing a raging epidemic which claimed the life of their doctor.
When the general learned a doctor was aboard the William and Sarah, he was eager to allow the Jewish passengers to land. With the treatments of Dr. Samuel Nunez, who formed Georgia's first pharmacy, the epidemic ended.
Over the objections of the London Trustees, General Oglethorpe allowed the Jewish passengers to settle in Savannah. They formed Congregation Mickve Israel, the third oldest synagogue in America.
VIDEO CORRECTION: Instead of four children, Dr. Nunez and his wife Rebecca had seven children. An infant son died in London in January 1727. Joseph and Rachel appear to have stayed in England. Moses, Daniel and Zipra sailed with Dr. Nunez. On November 12 of the same year, according to the Sheftall Diaries, Rebecca, the wife of Dr. Nunez, arrived with their daughter Esther De Lyon whose husband Abraham had sailed with Dr. Nunez. Also arriving in November were Abraham and Esther's two daughters Rebecka and Rachel and David Mendes Machado, Zipra's husband. (less)
