He had been fighting pancreatic cancer since January 2008. Many who get the diagnosis die within months, if not weeks, but Swayze vowed a valiant fight. The tabloids counted him down and out several times. But Swayze told Barbara Walters last year that his solid will, and the love of his longtime wife Lisa Niemi, was keeping him going. Swayze first came to prominence in "The Outsiders" in 1983 and then played a series of renegades and bad boys in a variety of TV shows and movies. It was "Dirty Dancing" in 1987 that made him a superstar and international sensation. The low budget movie was right up Swayze's alley and featured him as a dancer at a resort. Swayze's mother, Patsy, ran a dance studio in their native Houston and he spent inordinate hours learning all kinds of dance. Swayze, in fact, met future wife Lisa at the dance studio. He was 19 and she was 15. They married in 1975. The smash "Ghost" followed in 1980 and solidified Swayze's name as a leading man and heartthrob. By 1991, he was also PEOPLE Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive." Whoopi Goldberg, speaking on "The View" recently said "Patrick Swayze is the reason I have an Oscar. They didn't want me for 'Ghost.' But he fought for me and he said he wouldn't do the movie without me." Most recently, Swayze starred on A&E's "The Beast", even through chemo and cancer treatments. Swayze's longtime publicist, Annett Wolf, said Swayze died with his family at his side. Other Swayze credits include "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything!
