Classé dans la catégorie rock progressif, Procol Harum est porté par le chanteur/pianiste Gary Brooker, son fondateur, et le parolier Keith Reid. La formation initiale comprenait également Robin Trower à la guitare, Matthew Fisher à l'orgue, B.J. Wilson à la batterie et Dave Knights à la basse. Handicapé par de fréquents changements de musiciens, le groupe est dissous en 1977 puis opère son retour en 1991.
