Quest MCODY chose his career path at an early age. He was in elementary school when he stood in front of a crowd and rapped a verse about reading and how important it was. From that day forward, he always knew that he would be in front of people. Born, Kimani Graham, he chose the name Quest MCODY, the first part symbolizing his journey to success and the second- a bit of prophesy, M.C.O.D.Y breaks down to MC of da year, which year? Any year.
One thing that Quest MCODY has on his side, other than incredible talent, is visibility. He has been featured on numerous websites as well as a number of television shows. He was a participant and Detroit winner of The Next Episode which aired on Showtime. He has been seen on MTV, on several DVDs, and he has a co-starring role in the upcoming feature film, 5K1. Then there are his numerous other appearances and accomplishments. He was named one of VIBE Magazines Top 51 Unsigned Rappers in Dec., 2007. The acknowledgement came as a surprise, he got a message that he was going to be featured in Vibe Magazine, and the next month, there he was, without having to submit anything about himself.
The word is out.
His new album, The Light Project was produced entirely by Detroit producer, Yung Viz. The album has very few features in a day when most solo releases feel like group albums. Quest adds R&B voices to two tracks, Cynara Moore on You and Gator on Champion. The only other rap appearances are by Royce Da 59, Guilty Simpson, and Marvwon on Fade Back-Remix which is included on the album as a bonus track.
The Michigan Citizen sat down with Quest MCODY to discuss his new album and what it takes to be a light in the dark.
The Michigan Citizen: Quest, why The Light Project?
Quest MCODY: I think its pretty dark in music right now. A lot of artists are conforming and making music that is not authentic. I wanted to make an album that is 100% me. Id rather be loved for who I am than liked for whom Im not. Plus, the response has been great. There have been a lot of online sales, especially in Europe. The majority of my CDs sell overseas. A lot of us dont even know how much exposure we have over there until we get there, but getting there can be very costly.
MC: Why do you think there are so many great music artists coming out of Detroit right now?
QM: I think we are descendants of music. There were a lot of people who were either part of Motown, worked for them, or wanted to be a part of the whole experience. These people grew up and became our parents. So grew up with a special affinity for music, we were exposed to music a lot. We also have had a lot of breeding and proving grounds to hone our talent in. Then, sometimes its just the luck of the draw, some people are just naturally talented. (less)
