- Description : Rabia alAdawiya was a woman saint a...(more)nd poet in the 8th century. She became one of the greatest Sufi teachers who set the doctrine of mistical love. She illustrates that women can develop an independence of mind and that women could be regarded with respect in early Islam, despite their sex.She was born in a poor family in Basra and was sold as a slave when she was a child. Her master made profit of her beautiful look, nice voice and dancing talent and he used her for entertain people, making money for him in many ways. According to the legend, one day as she was singing at a wedding she found herself awakened by the God. From that moment she left everything that she had been doing before, and she refused either to sing or to dance, or to play any music for anyone except for her Allah. This made her master very angry because he could no longer use her to make money for himself. He began to ill-treat her, beat her hoping that this would frighten her into returning to her former ways and finally he sold her on Baghdad market to a priest. (The film's story is slightly different.)With the priest then they lived in hermitage spending their days with meditation, praying and preaching. She died at the age of cca. 80.There is a nice mosque in Cairo named after her. Her tomb is on the mountain of Olives near Jerusalem. Her life's legend was filmed in 1963, Nabila Abeid was only 18 years old when she played this role wonderfully. Don't miss the famous Oum Kalthoum song in the end. :) (less)
