  • Description : The director, who brought The L...(more) to the stage before creating this film, discusses what he unearthed about the town of Laramie itself during the year he spent interviewing its people.

Not even the people of Laramie, Wyoming, can agree on what really happened to college student Matthew Shepard, except for the objective facts. He was brutally beaten and left to die by two young men, lapsed into a coma and passed away. Why did the perpetrators do it? Who was at fault? Why did it happen in Laramie?

To attempt to make sense of it, Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theatre Project traveled from New York to Laramie and performed 400 hours of interviews with townspeople. Those 400 hours were culled and honed into a stage play called The Laramie Project. The film The Laramie Project, inspired by that play, took on a life of its own as the all-star cast filmed on location, often with direct contact with the real-life individuals they were portraying.
