Further upping the intensity ante in UFC 2009 Undisputed are gigs worth of good footage plucked directly from the archives in Vegas. This footage is showcased in the Classic Fights mode: A goal-oriented contest that asks users to reenact key fight moments within UFCs history. Not only is there video made specifically for the game to set up these classic bouts (stuff such as Liddell vs. Ortiz and Penn vs. Stevenson), but the interviews and all of the pre-fight trash-talk has been included too. Bits of sound from the actual match are peppered into your match for additional realism and to re-create that general feel of anxiousness that surrounded these huge bouts. Footage of the match is an unlockable, too, which is actually a decent motivator for those who missed some of these events live.
Undisputed includes a Career mode that allows an unlimited amount of fighters to be progressed into a champion. Career is complete with inspirational trainers, a fairly decent create-a-fighter area and lots of training to build up those stats. There are a lot of statistics for each fighter, too, which allows for myriad fighter types to invade the ring. The only things you really cant do in Undisputeds Career Mode is fight until youre 50 (a career is capped to seven years) and fight drastically out of your weight class (read more about these decisions in our interview with Career Mode guru Wesley Bunn, who also happens to be a trainer in the game). Fighting bouts with huge proportional discrepancies would have been pretty sweet, as would trying to knock out the cocky young kid with a grizzled veteran. But I also understand why these abilities didnt make the cut: They just dont happen in the UFC.
In terms of fighter actions, the control scheme for Undisputed is very precise and responsive. The speed at which users can throw punches, block and work up the transition hierarchy is also very high—great for human vs. human matches, but a bit of a detriment when facing the CPU. Its not an issue on the low difficulty levels since most of the competition is outmatched by even an amateur human player. However, as things progress, the CPU counter attacks much faster than humans can react, which results in a bigger guessing game than I would have preferred. I mean, there is next-move guessing involved in the real matches (those who guess wrong usually end up on the wrong end of a one rounder), but in UFC 2009 Undisputed, it seems like more of an unfair advantage than a case of whats he gonna do next?
Theres also a fairly high learning curve to UFC 2009 Undisputeds controls, but thats not a bad thing at all in a title that has so many layers to its actions. Yukes and THQ hold your hand along the way, too—better than in many move-heavy titles. Not only is there a hands-on tutorial built into Undisputed, but the manual is highly detailed and informative, unlike those two-pagers from some of THQs competition. The quick tip portion of the manual is especially useful, since it works like an FAQ: Find the interrogative that coincides with what you want to do and the basics will be revealed. From there, you can bust into an action or combo list for the finer points of the move sets of each individual fighter.
