• Black Eyed Peas set record for most weeks at No. 1

  NEW YORK – Will.i.am would love to say "I told you so" to all the people who have bashed the Black Eyed Peas in the past, but he won't — even though the group just made history on the Billboard charts.

  "There'

  s a part of me that wants to be cocky, but then I can't be cocky," the 34-year-old Peas leader said in a phone interview from Los Angeles on Tuesday. "There's a part of me that wants to call out all of my other peers and competitors. I don't want to say no names because I'm not like that, but part of me wants to do that. And would it be wrong if I did that? Yes it would. I'm not like that."

  This week the foursome, who have had their share of critics, will have topped Billboard's Hot 100 singles charts for 20 consecutive weeks, the most ever by an act. "Boom Boom Pow" and the song that dislodged it, "I Gotta Feeling," have been at the top of the charts for 12 and eight weeks, respectively.

  Though the band has had big hits over the years, "Boom Boom Pow" was their first No. 1 single. Will.i.am says he's surprised how successful the song became.

  "I knew that `Boom Boom Pow' would be big in the clubs, but I didn't know it would be that potent with the world, outside of the club. So that my accountant's aunt would be like: Black Eyed Peas, I love `Boom Boom Pow!'" he laughed. "I didn't know it was going to be that. I didn't know that teachers would say I like `Boom Boom Pow.'"

  "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling" have sold 3.8 million and 2.1 million digital downloads, respectively, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The band's CD, "The E.N.D.," is nearly platinum, selling over 900,000 units since its June release.

  But the success is not pure luck, will.i.am explains. Though he says the band didn't listen to the radio when creating their latest disc, he says they did heavy research by partying at underground nightclubs and events.

  They chose "Boom Boom Pow" as the first single after the response it got when they debuted it at a Grammy party this year. After its success, they used the same idea for their current hit.

  "When I picked up `I Gotta Feeling' we tested in the clubs, looked at people, how they responded to a song they didn't know. We're looking at what's the best summer song out of all the songs, let's go out there and have a party," he explained.

  So they had a party. And the response was great.

  He says the group will use the same strategy for the third single, the groovy "Meet Me Halfway."

  "We kept in mind when it would be coming out: It'll be out for the holidays. Do we want to be jam-pack smacking people high octane in the club during Christmas? No. So let's know that the emotion we want to get out there is still melodic, a love subject would be cool around Christmas and we still want to be in the club," he said.

  Will.i.am says he's not sure how to take it all in.

  "Like how am I supposed to take this and soak this in? If these people like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson have these No.1s, but yet we just broke a record, how am I supposed to take that because we came from the under, under, underground," he said.

• `Boom Boom Pow,' Kings of Leon CD top 2009 iTunes

  NEW YORK – The Kings of Leon are the kings of the iTunes album charts for 2009.

  The Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" is iTunes' best-selling single. Other songs in the top 10 include Flo Rida's "Right Round," Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and another Black Eyed Peas' hit "I Gotta Feeling." Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." is No. 7 on the singles list.

  "The Essential Michael Jackson" is No. 6 in the album top 10. ITunes declared Jackson its artist of the year.

  ITunes released its year-end data — taken from December 2008 to this December — on Tuesday.

• Fox: will.i.am self-censored on `Boom Boom Pow'

  LOS ANGELES – Fox TV says a moment of silence during the Black Eyed Peas performance on `American Idol' wasn't the network's doing.

  Midway through the song "Boom Boom Pow," TV viewers heard only silence and saw an

  "Idol" logo across the screen for a few moments. A Fox spokesman said it was singer will.i.am's decision to stay mum, apparently to keep an expletive from airing during Wednesday's performance.

  The two-hour finale of "American Idol" featured a lineup of pop stars, including the Black Eyed Peas, Cyndi Lauper and Keith Urban.

  Finalists Adam Lambert and Kris Allen were vying for the "Idol" title.

• Black Eyed Peas Goes "Boom"

  Los Angeles (E! Online) – For the Black Eyed Peas, The E.N.D. starts on top.

  The group's upcoming new album got off to an early start today when its lead single, "Boom Boom Pow," gave the Peas the first

  Hot 100 chart-topper of their career. Per Billboard.com, the song will rocket 38 spots to debut in first place on tomorrow's chart thanks to a major assist from digital sales.

  In fact, selling nearly 465,000 downloads for the week, "Boom Boom Pow" gives the Peas the biggest digital week ever for a group.

  Coldplay previously held the high mark after "Viva La Vida" moved 253,000 units last summer. Flo Rida, however, remains the all-around champ with a 636,000-strong download week in February.

  While this is the first No. 1 single for will.i.am & Co., Fergie landed three No. 1 hits with her 2006 solo bow, The Dutchess.

  The E.N.D., which drops June 9, is the group's first studio album since she found solo success.

• Black Eyed Peas score first No. 1 on Hot 100

  NEW YORK (Billboard) – The Black Eyed Peas are set to log their first No. 1 single in the United States when Billboard issues its Hot 100 chart on Thursday.

  "Boom Boom Pow" -- the first single from their

  upcoming fifth studio album "The E.N.D." -- sold 465,000 downloads last week, setting a new record for best single-week and debut download totals by a group. It ranked at No. 39 on the previous chart.

  The group's prior best showing on the Hot 100 was a No. 3 peak for both Grammy-winning tunes "Don't Phunk With My Heart" and "My Humps" in 2005.

  Coldplay had set the weekly digital sales record for a group when "Viva La Vida" moved 253,000 the week in June 2008. Maroon 5 held the mark for most downloads in a debut week when "Makes Me Wonder" opened with 244,000 in May 2007. The overall record for both categories was established by Flo Rida in February when "Right Round" debuted with 636,000 downloads.

  "The E.N.D." will be released on June 9 via Interscope Records. It marks the band's first album of new material since 2005's "Monkey Business," which sold more than nine million copies worldwide, the label said.
