• TV composers Wendy & Lisa had princely education

  LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - For Wendy Melvoin and LisaColeman, a.k.a. Wendy & Lisa, working with Prince in the 1980sas members of hi

  s band the Revolution was the perfectpreparation for a career in composing for film and television.

  The duo, who work together scoring NBC's "Heroes" and"Bionic Woman" and previously collaborated on "CrossingJordan," spoke about their experiences during theBillboard/Hollywood Reporter Film & TV Music Conference onThursday.

  "Our experience as touring musicians helped us score liveto picture," Coleman said. Prince would "give us little handgestures and signals and dance moves, and we would know whateach little thing meant. It became a game sometimes. If youmissed it, believe me, you heard about it later.

  "It was great training for me in scoring because I canwatch the screen go by and ... hit (scenes) with musicalpunctuation and accents," she added.

  Melvoin and Coleman's big break in the film world was1995's "Dangerous Minds." Composer Mark Isham asked for theirhelp in revising his score, which producers Don Simpson andJerry Bruckheimer had deemed too "jazzy." The project waseventually turned over to the women.

  Having worked with the Purple One brought opportunities butalso baggage when it came to getting work and "whether wereally had the goods or whether we were just performers withPrince," Coleman said.

  Trying to start a film and television scoring career 20years ago in a male-dominated field -- and as women who wereassociated with fishnets and heavy breathing onstage -- also"gave us a certain amount of notoriety that wasn't necessarilygood," she said.

  But the two now have as much work as they can possiblyhandle -- and unlike many Hollywood composers, they don't useghostwriters to do work for them.

  "Scoring is the gossamer art," Coleman said. "You reallyhave to not be there, but if you weren't there, the scene wouldsuddenly be just a play."

• Appreciation: The World's Most Dangerous Guitarist

  Los Angeles (E! Online) - Hiram Bullock was funky, jazzy and, according to those who should know, great.

  On The Late Show with

  David Letterman this past week, Paul Shaffer paid the guitarist the highest compliment by linking his name to the "H" word. For Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix.

  Shaffer and Bullock went way back. In 1982, when David Letterman launched his first night-owl show, Late Night, Shaffer hired Bullock to play with the "World's Most Dangerous Band." As an original member of the TV outfit, Bullock jammed with Stevie Ray Vaughn, Sly Stone, even Andy Kaufman.

  Bullock, long bedeviled by a drug problem, per the New York Times, left the band in 1984. But he remained a friend of the show and remained an in-demand guitarist, laying down tracks for Sting, Billy Joel, Paul Simon and many, many more. In 2001, he played with Spinal Tap at Carnegie Hall. Bullock also enjoyed a successful solo career.

  Bullock, who'd been diagnosed with tongue cancer, the Times reported, died July 25 of an undetermined cause. He was 52. A memorial service was scheduled for Tuesday in New York City.

  Other notable recent passings:

    • Paul Sorensen, 82, was bully Buddy Hinton's father on the Sally-sells-seashells-by-the-seashore episode of The Brady Bunch, aka "A Fistful of Reasons." The character actor amassed more than 150 other TV and film credits, including a recurring role on Dallas.   • Charles H. Joffe, 78, was the Oscar-winning producer of Annie Hall. If you've seen a Woody Allen movie from Take the Money and Run on, then you've probably seen Joffe's and partner Jack Rollins' names on Allen's signature white-on-black title cards. The pair had a hand in nearly 40 years' worth of Allen movies, including the upcoming Vicky Cristina Barcelona.   • Larry Haines, 89, was the one and only Stu Bergman, the good neighbor on Search for Tomorrow. Minus a couple of months at the launch of the daytime soap, Haines played the character from the show's 1951 beginning to its 1986 conclusion.

• Fey: No 'dangerous genius' wanted

  NEW YORK (AP) — Tina Fey, the star and creator of NBC's "30 Rock," prefers cooperative, caring collaborators. "I think there'

  s a certain way of making comedy where you're a dangerous genius and you throw things across the room," Fey says, "and that's not how we do things over here.

  "This is a very respectful work place. Everyone has a tremendous amount of discipline, from the actors to our writing staff."

  A darling of critics from the start, the show has gotten so-so ratings, raising concerns it would be canceled. But then it picked up a best-comedy Emmy last year. Last week, it picked up a Peabody.

  And NBC has picked up the show for a third season.

  Fey talked to The Associated Press on the set of "30 Rock" recently as it was wrapping up the five new episodes that have been shot since the end of the Hollywood writers strike. The first one airs Thursday.
