• US jury to hear opening arguments in Simpson trial

  LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AFP) - Jurors were Monday due to hear opening arguments in the trial of former football star and actor OJ Simps

  on in a robbery and kidnapping case that could send him to prison for life.

  The first witnesses are also due to appear in the trial which gets underway in earnest this week after four days of jury selection that resulted in a panel of three men and nine women, all of them white.

  Simpson, 61, faces 12 charges stemming from a confrontation in a hotel room in September 2007 after which he and a gang of gun-toting cohorts left with pillow cases stuffed full of sports memorabilia.

  The charges against Simpson and one of those men include kidnapping and armed robbery, both of which carry potential life sentences in the state of Nevada.

  Simpson and his group allegedly stormed the room at the Palace Station Hotel-Casino on September 13, 2007 to retrieve memorabilia largely related to the football star's career that he has insisted was stolen from him.

  Simpson later said he did not know that two of the men with him would be carrying guns and did not see them brandish their weapons.

  Four of the gang, including the two who carried weapons, have struck plea agreements for reduced sentences in exchange for testifying against Simpson.

  Simpson's latest ordeal comes 13 years after he was acquitted of killing his former wife and her friend.

  In 1995, Simpson, who is African American, was acquitted in Los Angeles by a jury that included nine blacks of the 1994 murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend, Ron Goldman.

  At the time, with Los Angeles struggling to recover from race riots three years earlier, the defense painted Simpson as the victim of a racist police force.

  The outcome of that trial, one of the most publicized murder cases in American history, remains controversial.

  Judge Jackie Glass has taken great pains to separate the current case from Simpson's racially charged murder trial.

  "If you are here thinking you are going to punish Mr. Simpson for what happened in Los Angeles in 1995 this is not the case for you," Glass said at the start of jury selection last week.

  The process of seating a jury actually began in mid-August when 500 prospective jurors filled out a 26-page questionnaire.

  The judge took great pains to separate the current case from Simpson's racially charged murder trial.

  She wanted to be sure that the jurors would not be biased against Simpson, who is African-American, and was acquitted of the 1994 slaying of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, both of whom were white.

  "If you are here thinking you are going to punish Mr. Simpson for what happened in Los Angeles in 1995 this is not the case for you," Glass said Monday.

  "I mean really, truly, folks," Glass said. "I'm not kidding around. Can you put that aside and understand that the case we are trying here and the info you're going to hear about here is totally separate from that case?"

  In Nevada trial, Simpson and a group of associates allegedly stormed a room at the Palace Station Hotel-Casino, brandishing weapons, to retrieve memorabilia largely related to the former football star's sporting career that he has insisted was stolen from him.

  Simpson has insisted he did not know that anyone had guns and said he never saw weapons. Four of the gang, including the two who carried firearms, have struck plea agreements with prosecutors for reduced prison sentences in exchange for their testimony against Simpson.

  Opening statements were expected to begin Monday.

  Simpson, a football Hall of Fame inductee, also was a television advertising pitchman and Hollywood comic film actor before the 1994 murders.

• Review: `Unbreakable,' Backstreet Boys

  Backstreet Boys, "Unbreakable" (Jive)

  The Backstreet Boys haven't changed — we have.

  We grew up. And while it's true

  that they're chronologically older then they were a decade ago when their self-titled debut placed them squarely in the midst of the boy-band zeitgeist — and there are only four of them now instead of five — they're essentially still pumping out the same kind of music they always have.

  And so you'll be forgiven, upon listening to "Unbreakable," for thinking you've heard this album before. Because you have — it sounds an awful lot like 2005's "Never Gone," which produced the hit "Incomplete" and solidified their footing in adult-contemporary territory. (Seems the Backstreet Boys insist on identifying themselves by what they're not: The title of the first single off "Unbreakable" is "Inconsolable." Unbelievable!)

  One thing they aren't anymore is a quintet. Kevin Richardson — who, at 36, hasn't been a boy in the backstreets or anywhere else for a long time — has left the band for that tried-and-true reason, to "pursue other interests." You'd never miss him, though: In his absence. AJ McLean, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and Nick Carter have continued performing the same sort of innocuous pop meant to distract you while you're leaning back and having a cavity filled.

  "Unbreakable," which has nothing to do with the 2000 M. Night Shyamalan film of the same name, consists of two kinds of songs: wistful, piano-heavy ballads ("Inconsolable," "Love Will Keep You Up All Night") and upbeat dance tunes with peppy electronic beats ("Everything But Mine," "Any Other Way," "Panic").

  The vocals remain solid, the harmonies smooth. Familiar and safe, there's nothing extraordinary about "Unbreakable," but at the same time, it's completely inoffensive. But you have to give the Backstreet Boys credit for this much: 10 years after the heyday of their genre, they've found a way to remain productive, if not entirely relevant.

  CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: JC Chasez of 'N Sync is among the producers and writers credited on "Treat Me Right," a classic happy-sad, poppy-heartbroken song of the era. Surely this pairing is tantamount to Red Sox and Yankees players driving together to the ballpark.
