• Wyclef Jean is working on memoir

  NEW YORK – Wyclef Jean is working on a memoir.

  The solo star and former frontman for The Fugees is collaborating with Rolling Stone writer Anthony Bozza on a book — currently untitled — to be published

  by It Books, an imprint of HarperCollins. Financial terms weren't disclosed and a release date hasn't been set.

  The publisher announced in a statement Monday that the book will cover Jean's life, from his childhood in rural Haiti to his musical career and philanthropic work.

  Jean, who just turned 37, is known for such hit singles as "We Trying to Stay Alive" and "Gone Till November." With the Fugees, he recorded the Grammy-winning, multiplatinum-selling album "The Score."

• Peter Jackson unveils `District 9' at Comic-Con

  SAN DIEGO – As director of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and producer of the forthcoming "Hobbit" films, Peter Jackson was given a hero's welcome Friday when he made his debut at Comic-Con, the pop-culture festival.

  "All this geek power," he said affectionately. "I wish I could take the amount of energy and bottle it and give it to Hollywood executives to drink."

  Uproarious applause ensued.

  Jackson came to the San Diego Convention Center to introduce the latest film he produced, "District 9," a tale of alien invasion and segregation set in South Africa.

  Jackson had worked with the film's director, Neill Blomkamp, on the now-defunct big-screen adaptation of the "Halo" video game before it was suddenly shelved thanks to what Jackson called "studio politics."

  Disappointed, he and Blomkamp, a man Jackson describes as "born to make movies," channeled their energies into "District 9" instead.

  "We woke up in the morning thinking we were making 'Halo' and went to bed that night making 'District 9,'" Jackson said. "But it worked out for the best as far as I'm concerned."

  "District 9" tells the story of an alien ship that mysteriously came to hover over Johannesburg. Its inhabitants were separated from the human population and segregated into an area known as District 9. But after nearly 30 years, government officials aim to relocate the extraterrestrials — and the aliens aren't too happy about it.

  Jackson and Blomkamp developed the story based on a short film Blomkamp made called "Alive in Joburg." A pseudo-documentary, "District 9" uses handheld cameras, security camera style footage and faux newscasts blended with bloody action and lots of firepower to tell the story.

  "I really like the idea of science fiction that feels real, and because I like sci-fi so much ... I kind of wanted to see it in a way that felt as realistic and grounded as possible," Blomkamp said.

  And with the tale he was telling, it made sense to set it in his childhood home of South Africa.

  "Because of South Africa's really racially charged political background, that was the natural place for the story to go, with segregation and everything else," the first-time director said.

  But don't expect a heavy-handed political film.

  "Ultimately it is a Hollywood thrill ride really more than any sort of political statement," he said.

  Jackson said he acted as a mentor and facilitator, urging his protege to make his own movie in his own way.

  "There's no point in me trying to have Neill make my movie by proxy, because I may as well do it myself," Jackson said. "But I'm incredibly proud to have my name on it."

  "District 9" opens Aug. 14. Comic-Con continues through Sunday.

• Hollywood abuzz at South African sci-fi film

  LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Hollywood is buzzing with excitement about South African director Neill Blomkamp's debut film "District 9," a science-fiction thriller about aliens segregated in a Johannesburg township.<

  The movie -- about the struggles of insect-like extra-terrestrial refugees as they try to settle on Earth amongst hostile humans -- has garnered glowing reviews ahead of its North American release on August 14.

  Produced by Oscar-winning "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson, Blomkamp's film arose from the ashes of plans to adapt smash hit video-game "Halo" for the big screen.

  Yet while the film's setting is a futuristic parallel universe, the story is unmistakably rooted in South Africa's recent bloody history of apartheid and anti-immigrant social unrest.

  Vancouver-based Blomkamp, 29, acknowledges said that despite the symbolism of "District 9," he had not set out to make a "political" film.

  "I was aware that I didn't want to make a film that sounded overly political and that the audience would find really draining," Blomkamp told reporters at a press event in Los Angeles.

  "But I knew that I wanted the essence of South Africa to be captured and the essence of segregation and pure racism kind of hit it head on, because that was the environment where I grew up in.

  "So there was a fine balance between these many analogies of apartheid and these many analogies of the white government and oppression."

  Early reviews of "District 9" suggest Blomkamp has pulled off that balancing act -- Internet film review aggregator Rottentomatoes.com has given the movie a perfect 100 percent rating.

  The Hollywood Reporter hailed the movie as a "genuinely original science fiction film that grabs you immediately, not letting go until the final shot."

  The film's central character, Wikus van der Merwe, played by South African Sharlto Copley, is an employee of a private security firm attempting to unravel the mysteries of the aliens' weapons systems, which can only be unlocked with alien DNA.

  When Wikus is infected by an alien virus that begins to change his human DNA, the hunter becomes the hunted and he is forced to seek refuge among the extra-terrestrials in their Soweto-like ghetto, District 9.

  Blomkamp said Johannesburg was the logical setting for the film, doubting it could have been made anywhere else.

  "I think it would be incredibly difficult to replicate what we have in Johannesburg," he said. "There is so much visual detail here, the dirt or barbed wire or weeds, it's incredibly rich visually. For the film to work, I think you need this level of reality and this level of pollution and realness."

  New Zealand film-maker Jackson meanwhile said that Blomkamp's South African identity had allowed him to "bring a unique perspective" to the story.

  Jackson and Blomkamp first worked together during planning for a possible film version of Microsoft's XBox console hit "Halo."

  Blomkamp had impressed Jackson with a short 2005 film "Alive in Joburg," which first presented the concept on which District 9 is based.

  "I flew down to New Zealand to meet Pete and he signed off on me for 'Halo'; we started to make 'Halo' and then 'Halo' collapsed," Blomkamp recalled.

  "I was getting ready to move back to Vancouver and then he and Fran Walsh said 'Why don't you just stay here and we can try another film? Let's use the momentum you created in Halo and just keep it going and start something new.' "That sounded like a good idea to me. So they kind of allowed this new film to happen and let me make it, which was awesome for me."

• McConaughey's girlfriend has baby boy

  LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Matthew McConaughey's Brazilian girlfriend has given birth to a boy, People magazine reported on its Web site on Tuesday.

  The child -- the first for McConaughey and model Camila Alves -- was born on

  Monday evening, the report quoted the actor's publicist as saying.

  McConaughey, 38, said in January that he and Alves were "stoked and wowed" by the pending arrival. He started dating Alves, a native of Rio De Janeiro, after breaking up with Spanish actress Penelope Cruz in 2006.

  The actor, once named "Sexiest Man Alive" by People, starred in the recent romantic comedy "Fool's Gold" with Kate Hudson.

• Elvis is Alive Museum moving to Miss.

  ST. LOUIS - Don't count Andy Key as one of those Elvis Presley fanatics who insist the King never died.

  Key, 38, said he's "open to the possibility" Presley is alive, but he's counting on there being enough skeptics out there t

  o make his new business a success.

  With an $8,000 eBay bid, Key won the Elvis is Alive Museum's collection and plans to move the museum from its current site in Wright City, Mo., to Mississippi, where Key lives and Presley was born.

  "If (Elvis) wants to come to the opening, he can certainly come back," he said.

  Included in the collection are photographs, books, FBI files, DNA reports and other memorabilia that aim to support the theory that Presley never died.

  Bill Beeny, 81, who founded the museum's collection, said he sold the collection hoping its new owner would continue his work.

  "I'll certainly go down and visit once it sets up," he said.

  Key said he'd like the museum to complement the tourist attraction in Tupelo, Miss., where Presley was born and bought his first guitar. He's considering opening it in Laurel, Jackson or Hattiesburg, Miss.

  Elvis Presley Enterprises, which manages Graceland, the King's estate and mansion in Memphis, Tenn., previously has said it has no comment on the museum, a transformed coin-operated laundry 55 miles west of St. Louis.
