• 'Birthday Sex' singer Jeremih sees Diddy success

  NEW YORK – When Jeremih first contemplated a career in music, it wasn't silky soul, but rap that intrigued him the most.

  "I had so many beats on my computer (and) people were telling my I sounded like I could be th

  e next so-and-so," says Jeremih (pronounced JEHR'-uh-meye). "But after all the beats and rhymes, I felt like everybody around me was rapping and so I was like, 'I got to do something to stand out' ... so I started singing."

  It's clear he made the right choice: The newcomer, who turns 22 on Friday, has a No. 1 smash with his very first song, the bedroom slow groove "Birthday Sex."

  While that's a major accomplishment in itself, the Chicago native (who plays drums, piano, saxophone and base among other instruments) doesn't want to be just a hit-making singer. He's had a game plan for long-lasting success that stretches beyond singing.

  "I wanted to make that P. Diddy move — to get my own company, birth talent and make stars," Jeremih said, whose looks are reminiscent of a young Sean Combs.

  The Associated Press: Was it always easy for you to pick up different instruments?

  Jeremih: I feel like I always had an ear. I have the ability and the gift to hear a song and really play it in a matter of five to 10 minutes and make my own version out of it. So it's always been easy playing by ear. Now reading, that's a whole other story.

  AP: Was school just as easy?

  Jeremih: I was always pretty organized in high school and my mother, she always pushed me to just overachieve, both my parents. (They) let me know education is key and without it nowadays, you probably wouldn't be able to get a good job or have a decent living ... that was imbued in my head.

  AP: You graduated high school at 16 and went to college at 17. What was that like?

  Jeremih: It was a challenge. At the University of Illinois, I stayed at an unisex dorm and everyday it seemed like there was something going on non-school related. And with me being so young, with the clubs out there you at least had to be 19 to get in the clubs, let alone drink. So I found myself getting in a lot of trouble by graduating (high school) early. It was all lessons learned.

  AP: Will you go back?

  Jeremih: At first I was like, "Man, don't tell me I just wasted four years of my life without even getting that piece of paper." At the same time, I didn't want to miss this opportunity. I really do plan on finishing — I came too far.

  AP: Was it a challenge to get Def Jam to let you and your friend self-produce the entire CD?

  Jeremih: My biggest fear, honestly, was that you got Ne-Yo, you got The-Dream, you got Rihanna and Kanye West, all artist-songwriters, and how am I going to blend in? How am I going to make it at this label and not get lost in the mix? But once I thought about it, I'm 117 percent confident in my music ... I felt I could blend, I can hang with the rest.

  AP: A lot of young fans listen to your music. Will you be an advocate for education?

  Jeremih: Yes. It's so important. I felt it's really helped me out with speaking with executives and even with this interview right now. You want to know everything, what's going on, what's the meaning of these words people are saying, just to stay in tune.

  ARTIST: WEEZER

  SINGLE: I WANT YOU

  TO

  NEW YORK (Billboard) – It seems fair to say that Weezer's musical phases stem directly from the identity crises of its eccentric frontman, Rivers Cuomo. But even as the Los A

  ngeles quartet has shifted from '90s geek-rock to cultish breakup laments and then to glossy power pop, its sense of humor has remained consistent. On the first single from the upcoming "Raditude," the band continues to channel youthful nostalgia, this time through references to the movie "Titanic" and jokes about meatloaf. The song's upbeat rhythm recalls the '80s top 40 hit "Walking on Sunshine," exuding a catchy excitement that feels almost plastic but is still undeniable. It's also similar to the band's self-titled and somewhat overproduced 2008 release. The self-deprecating lines about being shy around women, however, are quintessential Cuomo.

  ARTIST: KANY GARCIA

  SINGLE: FELIZ (Sony Music Latin)

  Leave it to Kany Garcia to write a dark song called "Feliz." On the lead single from her second album -- "Boleto De Entrada," due September 22 -- the Puerto Rican singer-songwriter's sharply observant lyrics and pained, husky voice are a satisfying contrast to the bouncy acoustic pop behind it. Garcia does bittersweet very well, and she's capable of conveying hurt feelings with subtlety in her vocals even while ostensibly giving someone the finger in verse. On her Latin Grammy Award-winning first album, "Cualquier Dia," the quirkiest track (an ode to a vibrator) was buried. But "Feliz" is a bold choice for a single and a catchy song with a rhythm that borders on reggae-lite. Here's hoping the rest of Garcia's new material is as interesting.

  ARTIST: ALICE IN CHAINS

  SINGLE: CHECK MY BRAIN (Virgin/Capitol Records)

  After more than a decade of studio silence following original frontman Layne Staley's death, the iconic Seattle band Alice in Chains returns with a new singer and a refurbished sense of focus. "Check My Brain" -- the lead single from the group's forthcoming Virgin Records debut, "Black Gives Way to Blue" -- follows the summer buzz track "A Looking in View." "Brain" is faithful to the grunge terrain Alice in Chains mapped out in 1995. Written by guitarist/chief songwriter Jerry Cantrell, who shares lead vocal duties with William DuVall, the song revolves around Cantrell's distaste for his relocation from rainy Seattle to sunny Los Angeles. The band's classic, down-tuned stomp could easily pass for an unreleased track from the "Dirt" era and is sure to please longtime fans.

  ARTIST: LADY ANTEBELLUM

  SINGLE: NEED YOU NOW (Capitol Nashville)

  Lady Antebellum -- the trio of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood -- has lived up to its promise and then some. After a breakout debut album and touring slots with Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban, the group now faces the dreaded sophomore slump. But if the lead single, "Need You Now," is any indication, Lady A's career will continue on its upward trajectory. The song finds alto Scott trading lead vocals with a soulful Kelley, and it will connect with anyone who's ever dumped a significant other and regretted it in the early morning hours ("It's a quarter after one, I'm a little drunk and I need you now"). The passionate track begins and ends with sparse piano and packs a powerful punch in between.

  ARTIST: JEREMIH

  SINGLE: IMMA STAR (Mick Schultz/Def Jam/IDJMB)

  On the heels of Jeremih's debut single-turned-summer anthem, "Birthday Sex," "Imma Star" continues to peg the 21-year-old R&B singer-songwriter as a young talent to watch. The song bristles with confidence, as the Chicago native jokes about his quick rise to success and insists that it's no fluke: "Now that I got the torch, I'mma keep the flame." The-Dream's influence is even stronger here than on "Birthday Sex," from the distended, hypnotic yelps to the dense synths and nerdy analogies -- and occasionally, it veers too close to comfort. Still, few artists charge from the gate this convincingly, and Jeremih has the vocal chops to back up his boasts, proving that he's no one-hit wonder.

  LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – Hannah Montana edged out Mariah Carey on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart Thursday, as Miley Cyrus' TV alter ego claimed her first top-10 entry.

• Black Eyed Peas claim top 2 singles in U.S

  NEW YORK (Billboard) – The Black Eyed Peas held on to the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for a second week on Thursday.

  "I Gotta Feeling" led the field, while "Boom Boom Pow&quo

  t; followed at No. 2. The latter track ruled the Hot 100 for 12 weeks until "I Gotta Feeling" replaced it last week. Both come from the hip-hop act's album "The E.N.D.," which fell to No. 5 on the Billboard 200 Wednesday after three weeks at No. 1.

  Elsewhere on the Hot 100, Drake's "Best I Ever Had" stayed at No. 3, Keri Hilson's "Knock You Down," featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo, at No. 4, and Lady GaGa's "LoveGame" at No. 5.
