Ripley, Tveit, Keach, 'Les Miz, Next to Normal, Honey Brown Eyes' Are Hayes Winners
Those works were all named in production categories. The fresh take on the international hit Les Miz was produced in an intimate venue in Signature's Arlington, VA, home. Director Eric Schaeffer, performers Christoph
Next to Normal, a new rock musical that opens on Broadway April 15, was seen at Arena Stage in 2008 after a world premiere Off-Broadway. Changes were made since its first New York production and since its Arena staging (which was considered a Non-Resident Production despite being hosted by Arena), leading to the current Broadway run. In the Hayes category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Non-Resident Production, Next to Normal star Alice Ripley shared the award with Nilaja Sun (No ChildÖ). Ripley plays a mentally troubled suburban mom in Next to Normal. Aaron Tveit played her son and won the Hayes as Outstanding Supporting Performer in a Non-Resident Production. (Both appear in the Broadway staging.)
Lead Actor in a Non-Resident Production went to Stacy Keach, who plays Richard M. Nixon in the national tour of Frost/Nixon.
Stefanie Zadravec's Honey Brown Eyes, a play set in war-torn Bosnia in 1992, won the Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding Play or Musical.
Natascia Diaz and Chita Rivera tied in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Resident Musical for The Visit and ROOMS, a Rock Romance, respectively.
The 25th anniversary Helen Hayes Awards ceremony was held at the Warner Theatre and JW Marriott Hotel. For additional information, visit helenhayes.org.

There were two unusual aspects to the 2008 nominations: The voting resulted in many tied scores that could not be broken; and "the quantity and quality of ensemble work necessitated the division of The Canadian Embassy Award for Outstanding Ensemble into two separate categories (one for ensemble of a play and the other for ensemble of a Musical)."
Beginning with the 2009 Awards presentation, the award for Outstanding Lead Actor, Resident Play will be named The Robert Prosky Award for Outstanding Lead Actor, Resident Play. The naming of this award, approved unanimously by the Helen Hayes Awards board of directors, will continue to honor the legacy of the American actor who died in 2008.
This year's Helen Hayes Tribute, sponsored by Jaylee Mead, which recognizes some of the most distinguished artists in the theatre profession, was presented to The Artistic Directors of Washington's professional theatres - "almost 70 artistic directors who dedicate every day of their lives to creating exceptional theatre, routinely do everything from pick out a season to pick up the trash; and, possess unique artistic visions that forge our exceptionally rich theatre community."
The John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company was given to Constellation Theatre. This award was established in 2008 in memory of John Aniello, a devoted champion of young, promising talent and an avid theatregoer since 1960. The John Aniello Award "recognizes and encourages the efforts of companies who are just getting started yet have produced a body of work that is new, daring, and exciting."
A-List Secrets: Hollywood's (Unlikely) Hot Dog
—Libbye, Kentucky
Hollywood's dog o' the moment is an unexpected breed, one that has famous owners ranging from Samantha Ronson to Adam Sandler to John Legend. That dog is the English bulldog, he of the blunt nose and invisible neck and solid legs. To a lesser extent, stars also have fallen in love with the French bulldog, I am told, but really, right now, it's all about the English.
Sound exciting? You too can have one of these trendy canines, which come complete with frequent breathing problems and the occasional snoring habit. And all for the A-list price tag of...
About $1,000 to $2,000! That, I'm told, is the average price of a purebred bulldog pup. For that sum, you can get the whole package: the adorable squashface, the bat ears (in the case of a French bulldog) and the chocolate brown eyes. The eyes! That will melt your sooouuul!
SamRo's English bulldog is named Cadillac. Legend has one called Puddy. And Adam Sandler has had three: the late Meatball and Matzoball, and a newer English bulldog named Babu. (You can see photos and video of the dogs on Sandler's official site.)
"Some English bulldogs are very energetic," L.A. Dogworks president Andrew Rosenthal tells me. "Others are kind of laid-back. French bulldogs are out of their minds. When we have a bunch of them in our dog park, they all hang out together. I call them the French mafia. But the English are more like dopey troublemakers."
Speaking of troublemakers, I am here to answer any question you have about Hollywood, day or night, meaning during the day. Send 'em my way!
Got a question about Hollywood? ASK IT!
Oh, and be my fan on Facebook, 'kay?
Britney Booked on Driving Oops
The beleaguered pop star continued to make good on her court-mandated to-do list, turning herself in Monday night to the Van Nuys police station to be booked o
Spears arrived at roughly 9:25 p.m., clad in a short black dress, knee-length black boots, a black jacket and a pair of her omnipresent sunglasses, presumably to keep covering the medical affliction that demanded their presence during a custody hearing last week. She was accompanied by producer pal Sam Lufti and attorney Michael Flanagan.
The 25-year-old underwent the standard booking procedure, getting fingerprinted and photographed, and was released after 45 minutes without having to post bail. According to her case file, Britney Jean Spears, aka number 1020419, has brown hair and brown eyes, stands five-foot-five and weighs 125 pounds. (View the booking sheet.)
"It was amazing," she told reporters of her experience upon leaving the jail. "They were nice, they were really nice."
When asked whether she was relieved for the ordeal to be over with, Spears replied, "Yeah."
Spears was neither handcuffed nor placed in a holding cell during her booking and was described as being "cooperative" throughout the experience, per an LAPD spokesperson.
On Oct. 9, the "Gimme More" singer was ordered by L.A. Superior Court Commissioner Rebecca Omens to be booked on the misdemeanor charges of hit-and-run causing property damage and driving without a valid California state driver's license.
She was formally charged with the offenses last month, in connection with an Aug. 6 fender-bender in Studio City. Spears was photographed dinging a parked silver Mercedes-Benz with her black Benz in the parking lot of a vitamin store. She was snapped getting out to briefly survey the damage to both cars, then taking off.
The owner of the car, Kim Robard-Rifkin, didn't think the damage was as negligible as Spears and filed a police report a few days later.
Last week, Omens postponed Spears' arraignment from Oct. 10 to Oct. 25 at the behest of Spears' lawyer, to allow him more time to try and strike a deal with Robard-Rifkin before the case goes to court. Because the charges are only misdemeanors, the pop star will not be required to show at the Van Nuys Superior Court.
Should Spears be found guilty of the charges, she faces a maximum sentence per offense of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Anne Frank's 'one true love' pictured for posterity
A picture of the boy, 13 when his adolescent romance began with the 11-year-old Frank, was handed over by childhood friend Ernst Michaelis, who visited the Anne Frank museum with his children and grandchildren last month.
It is signed "your friend Lutz Peter Schiff" and dates from 1939.
Like Frank, Schiff -- who would pick her up after classes in the summer of 1940 -- later died in a concentration camp, at Auschwitz.
Frank's entry for Friday 7 January 1944 states: "I'm such an idiot. I forgot that I haven't yet told you the story of my one true love.
"I can still see us walking hand in hand through our neighbourhood."
Frank called Schiff "the ideal boy: tall, slim and good-looking, with a serious, quiet and intelligent face.
"He had dark hair, beautiful brown eyes, ruddy cheeks and a nicely pointed nose. I was crazy about his smile, which made him look so boyish and mischievous."
Annemarie Bekker, spokeswoman for the Anne Frank Foundation, which runs the museum, commented: "We are really very pleased to have received this picture."
The Frank family fled Nazi Germany to Amsterdam in 1933. They moved into a secret annex above her father Otto's canal-side office building in July 1942 after the Nazis invaded the Netherlands and set about exterminating its Jews.
The family was ultimately betrayed and arrested in 1944, and Anne died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp the following year at age of 15.
Her diary has been published in more than 67 languages.
