• No bubbly at Dior as Paris Fashion Week sobers up

  PARIS (Reuters) – Dior scrapped the champagne and laid on the glitter at its menswear show in Paris on Sunday, trying to seduce reluctant buyers with casual suits, adventurous cuts and sparkly detail.

  r's Chief Executive Sidney Toledano sounded a cautiously upbeat note, saying the fashion house did not plan to cut any jobs despite the global downturn.

  "It's a positive mood. We are saying in these times, it is important to dress as elegantly as possible," he told Reuters backstage after the show, surrounded by models and stylists.

  Belgian designer Kris Van Assche displayed wit and craftsmanship with pin-striped hooded tops, sparkling embellishments on suits and jumpers, and a shirt that was buttoned up at the back, revealing a coquettish triangle of bare skin.

  "It's about showing the cut, the material, things that are as pure as possible," Toledano said. "And you also have to make people dream, because it's a show."

  But Dior's optimistic effort only partly masked the somewhat somber atmosphere at this year's autumn/winter collections.

  Luxury executives used to describe their sector as fairly recession-proof, saying the super-rich would always shop, but plummeting stock markets and teetering banks have hurt even the biggest spenders.

  At the same time, the downturn has cut deep into a broad base of aspirational fashion fans -- mostly young, female professionals buying the shoes and handbags worn by their favorite celebrities.

  Fashion show regulars noted that Dior and other houses have cut back on the glamorous venues and extravagant festivities that used to be a staple of Paris fashion week.

  "I think they've generally hired fewer models, and there are fewer parties," said Yannick Maentele, a 19-year-old German model relaxing backstage after the Dior show.

  "For example, there's no champagne here right now, that's a contrast to last year. But then again, it used to be so decadent, so maybe this is not a bad thing."

• Mariah Passes on the Bubbly...Because of Baby?

  Los Angeles (E! Online) – Ellen DeGeneres knows how to put a possible baby-carrier in a corner.

  Hey, the Emmy-winning talk-show host had to ask about guest Mariah Carey's rumored expectant status. But while she

  pretended to let the pop diva off the hook Tuesday after receiving an elusive, "No, that's OK [to ask]," DeGeneres instead offered up a glass of champagne to ring in the nonnews.

  "You don't have to answer that. Let's just toast with champagne," the chat maven benignly offered, after which Mimi became all flustered, first going the feigned shock route and then trying to insist that 3 p.m. was too early for her to start drinking.

  "I can't believe you did this to me, Ellen," laughed the Grammy winner, who swapped vows with now 28-year-old Nick Cannon in April. "This is peer pressure!"

  "No, let's toast to you not being pregnant," Ellen insisted.

  "I can't believe her," Mariah said. "Why would we toast to that? How about to the future? For both of our futures, who knows what they hold."

  She then only pretended to sip the bubbly.

  So on second thought..."You're pregnant," Ellen said.

   

  But still Mariah resisted: "I didn't say that. No, no, no. My mother would be at home like, on the computer like, What are you talking about? We will let you know when we're going to have a family."

  Well, maybe Mariah wasn't thirsty this afternoon, but who doesn't want to clink-and-drink with Ellen? Other than pregnant people, that is?

• 'My Big Gay Italian Wedding' a bubbly romp

  NEW YORK – Whether you'll want to see "My Big Gay Italian Wedding" or not may depend on how you react to the title.

  Feel like a bawdy, big-haired romp? Well, come on down. Don't care if it's a bit derivative? You'v

  e come to the right place. Mind enough stereotypes to make an Italian-American anti-defamation activist weep? Hop over to St. Luke's Theatre.

  "My Big Gay Italian Wedding" is a comedy that's got beefcake and an over-the-top wedding planner, pouffy bridesmaid dresses and hyperventilating parents, boisterous dancing, a licentious Catholic priest, a hip-hop version of "Ave Maria" and heaps of fa-bu-lous voguing. What were you expecting?

  And yet, deep down, it's got heart. This off-Broadway production is really just a big, sloppy same-sex smooch, wrapped in a gooey cannoli.

  It works because it winks at the very people it lovingly mocks. And, judging from the audience's reaction at a recent performance, no offense was taken; roars of laughter greeted even the lamest joke.

  The original production, which first debuted in 2003, was written by Anthony J. Wilkinson, who also stars. He has since revised the comedy's script, bringing it up to date on the current debate about same-sex marriages.

  But while there are a few digs at anti-gay marriage advocates such as Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee, this isn't a politically strident or preachy work. The only on-stage anguish is about getting everyone to the altar on time.

  The 16-character play opens with Anthony (Wilkinson) informing his parents he wants to marry his boyfriend Andrew (Daniel Robinson).

  "I want to be committed in the eyes of God," Anthony tells his parents.

  "Oh, you should be committed all right," his mother shoots back.

  Anthony's Italian-Catholic parents agree only on two conditions: The family priest must perform the ceremony, and Andrew's estranged mother must attend the ceremony. Both will be tough to pull off, especially with a secret affair threatening to ruin the special day. Cue the shenanigans.

  Much of this will be familiar: There are echoes of "Tony n' Tina's Wedding" with a dash of "La Cage aux folles" and, of course, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," the smash 2002 film. The show recently got a little verisimilitude when a cast member of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" signed on as a producer.

  Standout performances include Brett Douglas, as the insanely fussy wedding planner, who seems to single-handedly lift the show whenever he appears; Tricia Burns as Anthony's squeaky-voiced sister; Randi Kaplan and Joe Scanio as Anthony's parents; and the quite appealing Wilkinson.

  Some of the best bits occur when the cast interacts with the audience. One night, Kaplan spied someone in the crowd her character deemed underdressed: "You wore shorts to my son's wedding?" she roared. "I'll get you a 20 percent discount at Macy's!"

  Teresa A. Cicala directs this frantic confection and choreographer J. Austin Eyer keeps the action percolating on an impossibly small stage. And when it's all over — uneven, goofy and yet sweet, just like a real wedding — the two grooms meet you at the exit and thank you for coming.

• Colbie Caillat cruising to first No. 1 album

  LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – Singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat of "Bubbly" fame is on track to score her first No. 1 on the U.S. pop album chart next week with her second release.

  Industry prognosticators bel

  ieve "Breakthrough" (Universal Republic) could sell between 90,000 and 100,000 copies during its first week. Data for the week ended August 30 will be released on Wednesday.

  Her first album, 2007's "Coco," opened at No. 5 with 51,000, but saw its best sales week over the Christmas frame of that year, when it moved 141,000. So far, "Coco" has blown through 1.96 million copies in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan. It yielded the hit single "Bubbly," which reached the top 10 of the Hot 100.

  Other acts looking to make big bows on the Billboard 200 next week include U.K. singer/songwriter Imogen Heap's "Ellipse" and Christian rock band Skillet's "Awake." Both titles look good for a top 10 entry. Another couple albums may skirt the edge of the top 10 in their first week out: Arctic Monkeys' "Humbug," LeToya's "Lady Love" and Matisyahu's "Light."

At first glance,such a proposition seems tenuous: DD has remained relevantenough without any outside help through the years; is this kidgoing to contemporize the band into an object of ridicule?Thankfully, "Falling" demonstrates surprising versatility fromTimberlake.   When Jay-Z announced he was coming out of retirement, manyquestioned if he could return to the charts with platinumplaques. With "Blue Magic," the debut single from November 6release "American Gangster," he still sounds like the samehitmaker who arguably is the best rapper of all time. With helpfrom longtime production partner Pharrell and Neptunes partnerChad Hugo, the combination of a smooth arrangement and Jay-Z'sconfident, laid-back flow shows that his music gets better withage. With Pharrell's sample of En Vogue's "Hold On" as afinishing touch on the hook, "Blue Magic" is a mature, albeitnostalgic single that reminds of the best that Z can be.

  SINGLE: IT NEVER RAINS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

  While radio may be less indulgent than fans, "It NeverRains in Southern California" (a No. 5 Billboard Hot 100 hitfor Albert Hammond in 1972) is the ideal blend of BarryManilow's earnest signature meshed with a modicum of kitsch.The arrangement is true almost to the note, while the idol ofmillions adds his own touch with well-placed modulation at thepeak, accompanied by a swirl of cotton candy strings.

  SINGLE: REALIZE

  Colbie Caillat gained her initial following with jauntydebut "Bubbly" via an organic campaign at MySpace, ultimatelyleading to a top 10 hit on The Billboard Hot 100. Follow-uptrack "Realize" is comparable with its acoustic folk-popimprint and simplistic declaration of steadfast love. This songmay be "Bubbly, Part II," but Caillat remains among thepromising new melodic singer/songwriters to brighten the 2007musical landscape.
