• Docu on screenwriting headed for theaters

  LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – First Run Features has acquired North American theatrical rights to Peter Hanson's "Tales From the Script," a documentary that details the lives and work of dozens of Holly

  wood screenwriters.

  The film will open in a limited run March 12 ahead of its April 20 DVD release.

  Among those interviewed in the film are Shane Black ("Kiss Kiss Bang Bang"), Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption"), William Goldman ("All the President's Men") and Paul Schrader ("Taxi Driver").

  "Script" premiered at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January and has since screened at the Austin and Starz Denver fests.

  Hanson's project includes a companion book, "Tales From the Script: 50 Hollywood Screenwriters Share Their Stories," which HarperCollins imprint IT Books will publish January 26. The 346-page book features photo portraits and additional interviews.

  An author and filmmaker, Hanson wrote and directed the documentary "Every Pixel Tells a Story" in 2002.

• Rihanna "embarrassed" she fell for man like Brown

  LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – After being beaten by singer Chris Brown in February, pop star Rihanna felt embarrassed she fell in love with the type of man he was and left him to set an example for young women, she said in an i

  nterview on Thursday.

  Rihanna's comments to ABC News mark her first TV interview in which she spoke about the beating, which occurred on the eve of the music industry's Grammy Awards in Los Angeles and resulted in Brown's guilty plea to an assault charge.

  The Barbados-born Rihanna, whose hit songs include "Umbrella" and "Disturbia," said she felt ashamed when the public learned. A police photo of her bruised and bloodied face was leaked to the media, and a detailed description of the event was placed in court documents.

  "I didn't want people to think that that's the kind of person -- that I fell in love with that person," Rihanna told TV journalist Diane Sawyer on ABC's "Good Morning America."

  "That's embarrassing. That's embarrassing that that's the type of person that I fell in love with, so far in love, so unconditional that I went back," she said.

  Rihanna and Brown, whose hit songs include "Run It" and "Kiss Kiss," reunited within weeks of the beating spending time together in Miami at the home of rap star Sean "Diddy" Combs. But Rihanna has since left Brown.

  "It's completely normal to go back," Rihanna said.

  "You start lying to yourself," she said. "The minute the physical wounds go away, you want this thing to go away, this is a memory you don't want to have ever again."

  But the 21 year-old said she was motivated to leave Brown by the knowledge that young girls look up to her.

  "When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result into some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part," she said in the interview.

  "I couldn't be held responsible for telling them, 'Go back.' Chris, even if Chris never hit me again, who's to say that their boyfriend won't," she said.

  Rihanna also advised women who are abused not to react based on love.

  "Come out of the situation and look at it third person and for what it really is, and then make your decision, because love is so blind," she said.

  A representative for Brown could not be reached for comment.

  Brown, who previously had enjoyed a squeaky clean image, was sentenced to 180 days of community service and five years of probation for the assault.

  He publicly apologized, and has begun performing community service, which includes roadside cleanup, in his home state of Virginia.

  On Friday, "Good Morning America" will air the second part of Sawyer's interview with Rihanna. The pop star will discuss what happened that night in February, when Brown hit her while they were in a car on the eve of the Grammy Awards.

• Chris Brown announces tour, Rihanna has new single

  LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – R&B singer Chris Brown announced a month long "fan appreciation" tour on Tuesday -- the same day that ex-girlfriend Rihanna released a new single seen by some as evoking their stormy rela

  tionship.

  Both Rihanna's single "Russian Roulette" and Brown's tour announcement were firsts since their relationship came to a violent end in February.

  Brown, 20, was sentenced to five years probation and community service in August for a bloody attack on Rihanna, 21, on the eve of the Grammy Awards in February. He has since publicly apologized for the assault, but has remained largely out of the media spotlight.

  Brown's record company Jive said the "Kiss Kiss" singer would play small venues in 19 U.S. cities starting in Houston, Texas on November 14.

  Billed a "fan appreciation tour" it is intended to thank his followers for their support, Jive said.

  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a Los Angeles domestic violence intervention charity called the Jenesse Center, and an organization providing friendships and jobs for people with developmental disabilities called Best Buddies International.

  Brown's new single "I Can Transform Ya" was released in late September.

  Rihanna's first single from her upcoming album "Rated R", with rival label Def Jam Records, tells the story of a woman faced with a game of Russian roulette.

  "You can see it through my chest/That I'm terrified/But I'm not leaving/I know that I must pass this test/So just pull the trigger," part of the lyrics read.

  Rolling Stone.com described it as a "dark ballad" that ends with an ominous gunshot and "seems to find Rihanna singing about enduring a tumultuous relationship."

  Both Brown and Rihanna were among the fastest rising R&B artists in the United States before the assault, which led to Brown losing several commercial sponsorships and triggered a national debate about violent relationships.

• Chris Brown gets probation for assault on Rihanna

  LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – R&B singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty on Monday to assaulting his former girlfriend, pop star Rihanna, in an agreement with prosecutors that calls for him to spend five years of probation and atten

  d courses on domestic violence.

  Brown, singer of the hits "Run It" and "Kiss Kiss," will be formally sentenced August 5. He had faced four years in prison if convicted in a trial on charges of assault and a making a criminal threat. There was no plea deal on a second charge.

  In addition to the probation and the domestic violence course in his home state of Virginia, Brown also must perform 180 days of community service.

  He was ordered to keep his distance from Rihanna, 21, who was in the courthouse on Monday and prepared to testify against him.

  Brown, 20, showed no emotion as his high-profile defense lawyer Mark Geragos told Los Angeles Judge Patricia Schnegg of the plea agreement with prosecutors.

  Dressed in a gray suit, the singer was accompanied into the courtroom by his mother and an entourage of supporters.

  "I think it's commendable that you took responsibility for your conduct, sir," Schnegg told Brown.

  He was accused of beating Rihanna, whose hit songs include "Umbrella," in a rented Lamborghini after the two attended a swanky music industry party in February on the eve of the industry's Grammy Awards.

  A police photo of Rihanna's bruised and battered face taken after the incident was leaked to the media but details of what happened that evening have been scant. Brown's plea means that evidence against him will not be heard in an open court.

  "Rihanna believes this is a fair and just resolution to this case," her attorney Donald Etra told reporters outside the courthouse following the hearing. He said Barbados-born Rihanna learned of the plea about an hour before the hearing was set to begin Monday afternoon.

  L.A. District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said the plea was similar to other cases for first-time offenders like Brown and prosecutors had discussed it with Rihanna.

• Downey gives Sherlock Holmes an action update

  LAS VEGAS – Leave it to Robert Downey Jr. to turn Sherlock Holmes into a wisecracking action hero who ends up handcuffed naked to a bed.

  Downey offered a sneak peek Tuesday of "Sherlock Holmes," his new take on the

  cerebral detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle.

  Theater owners attending their annual ShoWest convention got to see Downey's Holmes in a bruising boxing match, diving from a tall building into London's Thames River and trading barbs with roommate Dr. Watson (Jude Law), who complains about the detective's slovenliness and nocturnal violin playing.

  "Holmes, does your depravity know no bounds?" Watson asks the detective.

  In one scene, the unclothed Holmes finds himself cuffed by both hands to a bed.

  Downey also turns the detective into something of a ladies man as his Holmes gets a romantic interest (Rachel McAdams). Conan Doyle's Holmes lived a monk's life, save for one purely platonic dalliance with a female foil whose intellect he greatly admired.

  Despite the saucy swagger and attitude of Downey's "Sherlock Holmes," directed by Guy Ritchie, the actor said the movie is true to the spirit of Conan Doyle's stories, which have plenty of action.

  Past screen adaptations of Holmes stories "just never had the money to do it right," Downey said.

  Downey joked that after his superhero flick "Iron Man" had a blockbuster opening weekend last year, his agents told him he had a window of the "next hour and a half" where he could do anything he wanted in Hollywood. His agents told him "don't do anything crazy," Downey said.

  The actor said he called Joel Silver — the producing partner of his wife, Susan Downey, and his collaborator on "Weird Science," "Gothika" and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." Downey said he told Silver he was interested in doing an intelligent action movie that also was a period piece.

  "I gave him basically an impossible list," said Downey, whose upcoming drama "The Soloist" co-starring Jamie Foxx also was screening at ShoWest on Tuesday.

  Released by Warner Bros., "Sherlock Holmes" is due in theaters Christmas Day.
