• Chris Brown Cops Plea, Avoids Showdown With Rihanna

  Los Angeles (E! Online) – The Chris Brown-Rihanna reunion show turned out to be a bust. But that didn't mean there weren't any fireworks.

  Brown scuttled the long-awaited court showdown between the former fl

  ames as he copped a plea today and managed to avoid jail time for their now infamous Feb. 8 altercation.

  The 20-year-old singer pleaded guilty to felony assault and was put on five years' probation and ordered to enroll in an anti-domestic violence program. He must perform 180 days of community service and must have all his travel vetted by a probation officer.

  He is due to be formally sentenced Aug. 5, at which time a charge of making criminal threats is expected to be dismissed.

  The announcement came as Rihanna waited in a private area of the criminal courts building. The 21-year-old "Disturbia" singer was ready to lay out her version of what went down following a Grammy Awards pre-party, if she were called to the stand.

  But her testimony ultimately wasn't required. Instead of a preliminary hearing to determine whether Brown would go to trial on felony counts of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury and making criminal threats, Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, dropped the bombshell that the case had been plea-bargained.

  "He did not enter a no contest plea," Geragos emphasized at a press conference after court this afternoon. "As long as I've known him in connection with this case, he's wanted to take responsibility. I advised him to wait and let me work through the legal process, which he did."

  Geragos described Brown as "a kid who had never been in trouble before," who "wants to move past this and obviously wants to make sure that the message gets out—that these kinds of things, domestic violence, are not acceptable. And [he] has accepted responsibility and will continue to do so and embraces this as an opportunity for him to get his life back on track, to get his career back on track."

  Brown will likely serve time on graffiti-removal and trash-pickup duty—a fate far better than the four-plus years he would have faced in a state prison if convicted at trial (or if he violates the terms of his probation).

  "I think it's commendable you took responsibility for your conduct," Judge Patricia Schnegg told him.

  "I want Mr. Brown to be treated as any other person...I want him to be treated the same," said Schnegg, ruling that Brown can complete his probation in his home state of Virginia, but must return to California every three months to check in with authorities.

  As part of his punishment, Schnegg also ordered that Brown receive a "complete stay away" order, prohibiting him from coming within 50 yards of Rihanna, except at industry gatherings, when the distance is shortened to 10 yards.

  Then, after Brown exited the courtroom, the judge brought in Rihanna and explained that she was also subject to the order and could be in violation should she contact Brown.

  "Rihanna was advised of the agreement and had no objection to it," her attorney, Donald Etra, told reporters outside the courthouse.

  "She was fully prepared to testify and she would have told the truth about what happened that evening."

• Weekend Showdown: Shopaholic vs. a Tween & Transformers

  Los Angeles (E! Online) – This week is all about the ladies—well, the ladies and, of course, Optimus Prime.

  While Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is the talk of the town this week, Tuesday's new relea

  ses will no doubt excite the female teen demographic as Isla Fisher's cutesy Confessions of a Shopaholic hits stores, alongside a new single by tweenster Demi Lovato. 

  But just in case you happen to be one of the millions of fans rushing out to see the Autobots battle the Decepticons for the second time on Wednesday, the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen soundtrack might tickle your fancy. The movie's video game comes out too, so you might as well make it a week of Transformers festivities, right?

  What about those other newbies?

  Shopaholic showcases Fisher as the bubbly Rebecca Bloomwood, sticking with a job she hates in order to pay off her rapidly increasing bills. Not too far-fetched these days, right? Plus, Fisher is adorable in everything she does, so it's probably worth a glance.

  Demi Lovato's sophomore CD, Here We Go Again, doesn't hit stores until late July, but the title track is available for digital download on Tuesday. If you like "John Mayer-ish types of songs," as she so eloquently put it, you should check it out.

  If you're not of the teenybopper or Michael Bay mindset, Steve Martin's Pink Panther 2 and our very own The Girls Next Door Season 5 also hit shelves this week, as well as Cheap Trick's latest album, aptly titled The Latest.

• Palin vs. Letterman: Final showdown?

  It all started with a joke. A joke that turned into a bipartisan battle, a dropped sponsorship, a call for termination, and now a protest today at the Ed Sullivan Theater.

  By now, you're probably well-aware of the contro

  versy surrounding David Letterman's off-color remarks about Gov. Sarah Palin and her daughter. Last week, Palin fired back on Fox News, calling Letterman a sexually perverted 62-year-old celebrity; Letterman attempted to apologize and invited her on his show. Then just last night, Letterman apologized again (this time, with a bit more sincerity), and the governor accepted.

  End of story? Not quite.
  
  The newly minted site FireDavidLetterman.com still plans to rally today at 4:30 PM eastern at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, calling for — what else? — David Letterman to be fired.

  According to the website, Letterman's second apology didn't do much to extinguish the flames. John Zeigler, one of the press contacts, posted on the site:

  "I'm glad he's acknowledged we're right. I think it's a good first step in the right direction, but I don't think it's enough."

  Michael Patrick Leahy, an RNC delegate and one of the organizers of the "Fire David Letterman" campaign, told TV Guide he was offended by Letterman's remark:

  "It's a disgraceful comment and it needs to be stopped…It is totally inappropriate and disgraceful for a 62-year-old man to sexually insult a 14-year-old girl, period. These comments are more egregious than those of Don Imus, and CBS fired him for those comments."

  Leahy, who is better known for his hand in organizing the anti-tax "tea parties" across the country earlier this year, estimated that anywhere from 50 to 300 people would attend the protest.

  When it will all end, nobody knows. But even Sen. John McCain is calling for the madness to stop. He told David Gregory on the "Today Show" that he appreciated that Letterman was sorry and that "now we need to move on."

• Weekend Showdown: Fergie vs. Eastwood?!

  Los Angeles (E! Online) – In what might be Showdown's strangest face-off to date, Fergie, film legend Clint Eastwood and the first-ever handheld version of Rock Band: Unplugged are all up for grabs this week.

  et's be honest—this is a battle of epic proportions.

  The Black Eyed Peas have "Boom Boom Pow"ed their way back on the scene after waiting nearly five years to release a follow-up to the 2005 megahit Monkey Business. But don't worry, the title is not a sign of things to come. The E.N.D. just stands for "Energy Never Dies," which is the way BEP describes the sound on their new album. Overall? The E.N.D. will give us the hottest dance tracks of the year.

  The Eastwood-directed Gran Torino was an awards season fave about an old Korean War vet stuck in his prejudiced ways. Eastwood plays the lead, a man who finds himself developing a complicated relationship with the Hmong family next door. Long story short, this movie is about gangs, guns and that prized 1972 Gran Torino.

  And finally, a portable version of Rock Band: Unplugged is hitting stores this week. What else can we say? It's a blast at home, so you may as well take it along on your summer vacay. Now you really can be a rock star wherever you go.

• Weekend Showdown: Leo & Kate vs. Dave Matthews

  Los Angeles (E! Online) – Forget summer blockbusters. This week some pretty major things are hitting the shelves and we're curious to know what you'll be spending the big bucks on—or maybe we're being a

  little dramatic and you'll only be throwing away about twenty bucks.

  Either way, Tuesday's main competitors are the Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet reunion flick, Revolutionary Road versus Dave Matthews Band's latest album, "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King."

  The long-awaited Titanic redux revolves around a 1950s couple desperate to escape the monotony of suburban life. In all seriousness, we were just eager to see the steamy love scenes between Jack and Rose—we mean Frank and April, right?

  The flick fared well in theaters and was a mainstay throughout awards season. Unfortunately, Winslet is just too incredible for her own good and her Revolutionary Road role was overshadowed by her Oscar-winning turn in The Reader. Solution: rent both and enjoy!

  Dave Matthews Band is back with their first studio album in over four years and from the sound out it, they're still on top of their game. On a sad note, the title and cover art of the record is a tribute to DMB founding member and longtime saxophonist, LeRoi Moore, who unexpectedly lost his life in August 2008. The "GrooGrux King" reference in the title is a nickname the band gave to Moore, whose influence is said to be felt throughout the album.

  Back to upbeat, if you're a DMB fanatic, the new disc will coincide with an upcoming summer tour. It never hurts to be familiar with the music when you check out a concert, so there's your incentive to go out and buy the record.

  Whichever way to choose to go, it looks like a great week to support the new releases.
