• Anne Hathaway gets starstruck over `Slumdog' star

  NEW YORK – Anne Hathaway is a fan of "Slumdog Millionaire" — and the young star of the film, Dev Patel.

  A starstruck Hathaway expressed her love for the actor's performance in "Slumdog" on the red carpet at th

  e National Board of Review Awards gala in Manhattan.

  Meeting Patel for the first time, Hathaway declared: "I love you in your movie so much! ... You're so beautiful in it. You broke my heart. It was gorgeous."

  Patel, pleasantly surprised by Hathaway's praise, asked her for a hug.

  He said: "That means so much to me. You don't understand. ... Thank you Mrs. Hathaway!"

  The 26-year-old actress and ex-girlfriend of Raffaello Follieri — who's now serving a 4 1/2-year prison sentence for fraud — corrected Patel, saying: "Mrs.? Oh no. Miss, miss!"

  Patel, 18, was clearly worried he'd offended Hathaway, to which she playfully responded: "No, you're not offending me — I'm just letting you know that it's 'Miss!'"

  The "Slumdog" star, who portrays an orphan boy's rise to win India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," accepted his award Wednesday night for breakthrough performance by an actor. Hathaway was honored as best actress for her role in "Rachel Getting Married."

  "Slumdog," set among the slums of Mumbai, topped Sunday's Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles, winning four awards, including best drama and best director for Danny Boyle.

• Beckham 'starstruck' by Stevie Wonder

  LONDON (AFP) - David Beckham said on Tuesday he was "starstruck" when he met Stevie Wonder, and told his wife that he wanted to take a picture with the music legend.

  The England national soccer star told BBC Radio tha

  t he was also left in awe by Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali, and added that Wonder's 1972 hit "Superstition" was his favourite song.

  After explaining his music selection, Beckham said that when he met blind singer Wonder, "He turned round to me and said, it was quite funny, he said: 'If you could teach me to play football, then you'd be some player'. You know, those sort of moments you cherish."

  "It's quite embarrassing because I was like turning round to (wife) Victoria and saying: 'I really want a picture but I can't ask him'."

  Victoria Beckham -- "Posh" in the Spice Girls -- eventually had to ask for the photograph.

  "I still get very starstruck by many people that we still meet," the LA Galaxy midfielder said, adding that Ali and Mandela had that effect on him.

• Music Review: Santogold's debut shows she's no M.I.A. clone

  Santogold, "Santogold" (Downtown): Philadelphia's Santi White — who performs as Santogold — has enough things in common with Sri Lankan-Brit MC M.I.A. to make the comparisons inevitable. Both employ Diplo and Switch as p

  roducers. Both women have oodles of hipster cred. And both deal in hybrid music that's simultaneously retro and futuristic.

  But where M.I.A.'s dance blend dabbles in bhangra, dancehall, hip-hop and grime, Santogold conflates her power-punk, hip-hop, reggae and pop-rock influences into an entirely different stew.

  Her self-titled solo debut shows off her stellar songwriting chops (she wrote most of R&B rocker Res' 2001 debut, "How I Do") and a daring willingness to surround her high-pitched wail in an array of noisy, clanging electro-beats and hard-driving melodies. The guitar-infused first single, "L.E.S. Artistes" recalls her R&B-rock roots as she sings of disingenuous scene-sters: "Stop tryin' to catch my eye/ I see you good you forced faker/ Just make it easy/ You're my enemy you fast talker."

  Still, Santogold's strength lies more in her musical inclusiveness than her cynicism. She flits from dubby bliss of "Shove It" and the stop-start, bleep-synths of "Starstruck" to the space-agey sound effects and echo chambers of "My Superman" and the bubbly pop-rock of "Lights Out" and "I'm A Lady." The genre jumping is not for the close-minded, but it's obvious Santogold's not here to adhere to any one pop sensibility.

  On the glitchy-twitchy disc standout, "Creator," she's not afraid to express her sense of self-worth. Over the gargantuan bass drops, she chants: "Me, I'm a Creator/ Thrill is to make it up/ The rules I break got me a place/ Up on the radar." She's definitely got our attention.

  CHECK OUT: "Creator" begins with simmering drum fills, Santogold's best jungle bird vocal imitation and then quickly picks up a thunderous, chest-quaking head of steam. Hold your head.

• Johansson: I'm in love with Obama!

  NEW YORK - Scarlett Johansson returned from the Persian Gulf with a whole lot of soldiers' trinkets and a delusion of her own engagement — to Barack Obama.

  "I am engaged ... to Barack Obama," Johansson joked in an intervie

  w with The Associated Press on Thursday. "My heart belongs to Barack, and that is who I am currently, finally, engaged to. Yes."

  Johansson, who showed her support for the Democratic presidential candidate at the Iowa caucus earlier this month, was really just deflecting a question about rumors she might be engaged (to actor-beau Ryan Reynolds).

  The 23-year-old actress talked about the warm welcome she received while visiting troops stationed in the Persian Gulf last week. Johansson dropped by U.S. bases in Kuwait on Jan. 17 and Jan. 18 as part of a USO tour in which she met about 3,500 men and women in uniform.

  "Everybody that I met there was so incredibly friendly and polite and genuine and generous," she said. "They were so, so sweet. I mean, I was just amazed."

  Johansson said some people ripped patches off their jackets as gifts and handed her challenge coins from their military units. One Marine offered up his St. Christopher medal. Another starstruck guy gushed: "You made my whole deployment!"

  Johansson has a full plate for 2008, with the release of films including "The Other Boleyn Girl" and "He's Just Not That Into You," as well as the arrival of her debut album on May 20.

  The disc, called "Anywhere I Lay My Head," features Tom Waits cover songs and one original track. "It was a really, really sort of inspired process to make this CD, and it was something I'd never done before," said Johansson, who said the album has a dreamy, ethereal quality.

  On a far more serious note: Johansson was still speechless Thursday over the death of fellow actor Heath Ledger, who was found dead Tuesday in his Manhattan apartment.

  "I'm really just so very shocked," she said. "He was an incredibly sweet, kindhearted and enthusiastic person. And, you know, he loved his daughter — I mean, that was like the light of his life. It's just a terrible loss."
