Book takes on big food questions with wit and grit
"Eating for Beginners: An Education in the Pleasures of Food From Chefs, Farmers, and One Picky Kid" (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $25), by Melanie Rehak: "Eating for Beginners" starts with a stark statistic: 61 percent of Americ
ans are confused about what to feed their family.

What follows is a cross between "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and "The Girlfriends' Guide to Toddlers" — an exhaustively researched and delightfully witty account of author Melanie Rehak's adventurous year working at a local restaurant and tracing its food supply to the sources, as well as grappling with her young son who won't eat a thing.

Through her visits to dairy, produce and animal farms, Rehak gains a deeper appreciation for the difficulties facing local farmers — and the need to support them. Organic food seems more expensive because the costs are more visible, one of her sources tells her. But the costs of conventionally grown food include public funding of irrigation projects and crop subsidies, not to mention pollution and food-borne illnesses.

Back on the homefront, readers can track the budding language skills of Rehak's son, Jules, in the myriad ways he refuses almost every edible thing she offers him — from "No" to "No this" to "No chicken. No pasta. No fish."

The juxtaposition between these dual tracks in Rehak's life — food and parenting — makes for an amusing read. After methodically describing how to butcher a duck, and the struggle involved in clipping a baby's nails, Rehak dryly concludes: "You genuinely feel it's easier to butcher a duck."

Despite her conviction that local is the way to go, Rehak (author of "Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her") is reasonable and flexible in the belief, knowing that it's not always possible to be choosy.

The general issue of accessibility of local produce and livestock, however, is unfortunately not addressed, a gaping hole in the book.

"Eating for Beginners" is funny, informative and relatable. And if you find your mouth watering at some of the dishes mentioned, Rehak is considerate enough to include recipes at the end of each chapter.

Crosby, Stills & Nash dust off old demos
DETROIT (Billboard) – Early recordings of a dozen Crosby, Stills & Nash tracks -- including favorites such as "Marrakesh Express," "Almost Cut My Hair," "Deja Vu," "Love the One You'
re With" and "Chicago" -- will be featured on an album of demos due in stores on June 2.

The release of the Rhino Records set, "Crosby, Stills & Nash Demos," coincides with the trio's June 18 induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and a brief summer tour of the United States and Europe.

"It's fascinating stuff," Graham Nash, who co-produced the set with Joel Bernstein, told Billboard.com. "On some of these songs you really hear us becoming a band, trying out different ideas in our songwriting and singing and harmonies. It really is a time capsule."

The "Demos" version of "Long Time Gone," for instance, features just Crosby and Stills during June of 1968, a few weeks before Nash joined the group. "Marrakesh Express," meanwhile, was recorded four months before CSN's first album came out in 1969. The set also includes: a Crosby solo demo of "Almost Cut My Hair;" a Stills solo take of "My Love is a Gentle Thing" form 1969; Neil Young joining Crosby and Nash on "Music is Love" for Crosby's 1971 solo debut album "If I Could Only Remember My Name;" and demos of three tracks for Nash's 1971 solo debut "Songs For Beginners" -- "Sleep Song," "Be Yourself" and "Chicago."

The full "Demos" track stack included: "Marrakesh Express," "Almost Cut My Hair," "You Don't Have To Cry," "Deja Vu," "Sleep Song," "My Love Is A Gentle Thing," "Be Yourself," "Music Is Love," "Singing Call," "Long Time Gone," "Chicago" and "Love The One You're With."

"Demos" is the latest result from a spate of vault trolling that's produced box sets for Crosby and Nash, a demos collection from Stills and expanded editions of "If I Could Only Remember My Name" and "Songs For Beginners." Stills is currently working on his box set, while CSN is recording an album of covers that's being supervised by Rick Rubin.

Report: Injured Richardson on flight to US
MONTREAL – Actress Natasha Richardson, critically injured in a skiing accident, was on a flight to the United States, Britain's Press Association news agency said Tuesday, quoting Sacre-Coeur Hospital.

The report d
idn't say where in the U.S. the flight was headed.

"According to the family's press agent, the lady has left Canada around 12:30 today," said Michelle Simard of the Sacre-Coeur hospital in a recorded message. "We have no information on Ms. Richardson's health condition, but the family should give more information by tomorrow."

Richardson was hospitalized after falling during a private lesson on a beginners trail at the famed Mont Tremblant ski resort Monday.

IrishCentral.com reported that the Tony Award-winning actress and wife of Liam Neeson suffered a head injury.

Richardson, 45, is the elder daughter of Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave and the late director Tony Richardson, and belongs to a British acting dynasty.

"We know that she has had an accident but we really do not know any more details," said Kika Markham, who is married to Richardson's uncle, Corin Redgrave. "We are very concerned."

Mont Tremblant said Richardson fell on a beginners trail and later reported not feeling well.

"She did not show any visible sign of injury but the ski patrol followed strict procedures and brought her back to the bottom of the slope and insisted she should see a doctor," said a statement from the resort, which is about 80 miles northwest of Montreal.

The ski resort said the instructor and a ski patrol accompanied Richardson to her hotel, where they again recommended she should be seen by a doctor.

Mont Tremblant spokeswoman Catherine Lacasse said Richardson said she was fine at first.

"An hour later she said she didn't feel well. She had a headache, so we sent her to the hospital," Lacasse said. "There were no signs of impact and no blood, nothing."

An ambulance was called and Richardson was brought to the Centre Hospitalier Laurentien in Ste-Agathe and was later transferred to Hopital du Sacre-Coeur in Montreal.

Producers confirmed that Richardson's husband, Liam Neeson, immediately left the Toronto set of his upcoming movie, "Chloe," for Montreal, a publicist for the film said in an e-mail.

Richardson's films include "Gothic," "A Month in the Country," "Nell" — in which she appeared with her future husband — "The Parent Trap" and "Maid in Manhattan."

Trained at London's Central School of Speech and Drama, Richardson has had extensive stage experience in the West End and Broadway. She won a Tony Award in 1998 for playing Sally Bowles in "Cabaret."

Her maternal grandparents were the actors Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, and her uncle Corin and aunt Lynn Redgrave are also both actors. Sister Joely Richardson is also an actress, best known for starring in the TV series "Nip/Tuck."

In January, Richardson and her mother played the roles of mother and daughter in a one-night benefit concert version of "A Little Night Music," the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical, at Studio 54 in New York.
She married Neeson in 1994, and the couple have two sons.

A grieving Liam Neeson finishes work on film
TORONTO – Liam Neeson has completed work on "Chloe," the film he was shooting when wife Natasha Richardson died after falling on a beginners' slope at a Canadian ski resort.

The actor quietly slipped into Toronto f
or a couple of days last week to complete work on the thriller, also starring Julianne Moore.

Richardson died March 18 after falling and hitting her head during a ski lesson at Quebec's Mont Tremblant two days earlier.

The Tony-winning actress was buried at a private ceremony in upstate New York on March 22.

A publicist for the Atom Egoyan film "Chloe," Lisa Ghione, said Neeson completed his scenes on Friday, and the shoot wrapped Saturday.
