• Teen drama "Huge" digs behind layers of fat, shame

  LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Will (short for Wilhelmina) is fat and has a bad attitude.

  Stuck at a weight-loss camp for the summer, she's got contraband food in a false bottom of her suitcase, finds cliqu

  es and mean girls even among the "level playing field" of fellow overweight teens and has no intention of listening to the skinny, bossy counselors.

  Welcome back Winnie Holzman, you have been missed. Sixteen years ago, the co-developer of ABC Family's new "Huge" created "My So-Called Life," a show that reveled in a generation of grunge-era kids drowning in inarticulate, inchoate angst and rage. It's far past time for a network to clear space for her sensitive, often hilarious insights into the adolescent mind.

  "Huge," premiering Monday, is no "MSCL 2." But the warm touches of Holzman and daughter Savannah Dooley, her writing partner, are everywhere: from a girl's adoration of her crush's loaned hoodie to the awkward retainers the teens wear to bed. Will (Nikki Blonsky of "Hairspray") is a perfect anti-hero for the series, a rebel who isn't interested in slimming down -- she's giving a raised middle finger to her parents by insisting she's going to gain weight at camp -- or making friends. In her unlikability, she is a breath of fresh air amid the brainwashing the other girls bring; one has been dieting "since I was 10" and talks about "thinspirations" when she hangs up photos of models by her bunk.

  But the series, no matter how well-written -- and that comes into question in places, too -- feels off-key. "Huge" gets the details right, but the bigger picture can seem forced, with coincidence and pat resolutions -- Will escapes to a diner, ending up in the booth right behind the camp director; two snitches promise not to rat one another out.

  Still, the bigger problem is this: What is "Huge" trying to do? Is this meant to be a screed about the unhappiness of being overweight? Or is it meant to be about accepting yourself for who you are? These two concepts feel incompatible, though with Holzman at the helm, perhaps they will coalesce in a few episodes. They certainly need to. Surely, the last thing "Huge" wants is to be the one show on television with an institutionalized thumbs up for beating up on fat people ... because they'll be the ones throwing every punch.

• Slash itching to start new Velvet Revolver disc

  NEW YORK (Billboard) - Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash saysthe group is planning a significantly shorter turnaround forits third album.

  The Los Angeles rockers plan to start working in earnest onthe follow-up to last year's

  "Libertad" in April, almostimmediately after they finish a tour that starts Thursday inChicago and includes dates in North America, Australia andEurope.

  "That's the big thing right now," Slash says. "I'm reallyjazzed about doing it. I've been working on new ideas, andwe've had a couple times where the guys all got together andworked on some stuff. I'm itching to see what this thirdrecord's gonna be, 'cause I think it's gonna be ... awesome,and I think we don't necessarily need to spend two years on theroad like we did last time (for 2004's 'Contraband')."

  No producer has been chosen for the project, but Slash sayshe favors "Libertad" collaborator Brendan O'Brien. And whilethe Velvet Revolver album is on the front-burner, Slash stillwants to move forward on a solo album, which he says willfeature a roster of guest vocalists.

• "Casanegra" shows storied city in realistic light

  TAORMINA, Italy (Hollywood Reporter) – The likes of Bogey and Bergman are nowhere to be seen in Nour Eddine Lakhmari's tour through the nocturnal underbelly of Casablanca, or "Casanegra," as the city's u

  nderclasses call it. Lakhmari picked up the prize for best director at the Taormina festival for this film about two childhood friends, young men striving to rise above the surrounding squalor.

  Moroccan films usually are relegated to art-house cinemas, but "Casanegra" is hip, stylish and engaging enough to break out further -- if it weren't for its two-hour running time. Lakhmari takes too long to set up the main premise, and then too long to see it through, though offering some Coen-esque characters and social criticism along the way.

  The film begins with the protagonists running from the police, then flashes back to explain how they got there. Adil (Omar Lotfi) lives with his mother and violent stepfather and dreams of moving to Sweden. Karim (Anas Elbaz) is secretly in love with an older, upper-class French woman, and his family struggles with the burden of his sick father.

  The two make petty money through petty crimes, some for local heavy Zrirek (a deliciously over-the-top Mohamed Benbrahim), whose sadism is equaled only by his neurotic love for his little dog.

  The more street-smart Karim is leery of getting further involved with Zrirek, but Adil needs to score big to buy fake documents for Sweden, and hopes to take his buddy with him. You know things will go downhill when Adil talks his friend into accepting just one big job that will solve all their troubles.

  The film caused a scandal at home, presumably for offering a different view of the infamous city. Like Lakhmari's antiheroes, no one in the developing or developed world wants to work menial jobs anymore, and class divisions widen especially in poorer countries. Even Karim, the brains of the duo, would rather continue selling contraband cigarettes than gut fish for his father's exploitative former employer.

  The acting from newcomers Lotfi and Elbaz is first-rate. Their chemistry is good, and they easily walk that fine line of making audiences care about two characters with relatively flexible morals. Shot mostly at night, the film has a palette of mostly seedy yellows and washed-out blues.

• Franco: MTV gave us the bag of 'fake weed'

  UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - Like the stoners they play in the upcoming "Pineapple Express," Seth Rogen and James Franco stumbled unkowingly into trouble Sunday at the MTV Movie Awards.

  And of course, the weed was someone else's.

  Early on in the show, Rogen and Franco took the podium to present the award for best summer movie so far, joking that MTV chose them because only "two potheads like us" would be willing to announce such a strange category. Then they pulled out a bag of "fake weed" and a "huge fatty joint" — and proceeded to light it.

  "Kids, don't really smoke fake weed like this," Rogen told the crowd at the Gibson Amphitheatre, with a degree of sarcasm to suggest that the only fake thing was the idea that it was fake.

  But before TV audiences could see the "contraband," the cameras pulled to an extremely wide angle, and stayed that way until Rogen and Franco left the stage. The awkward moment made some in the audience laugh, but left Robert Downey Jr. — who accepted the award on behalf of "Iron Man" alongside director John Favreau — with a puzzled look.

  Backstage, Franco told The Associated Press that MTV put them up to the joke, even supplying the script, the fake marijuana and the fake joint — then had a last-second change of heart about the bit.

  "MTV wrote it! ... Then backstage there was this big commotion: 'You guys can't say that,'" Franco said. "It says right in the script: 'Lights fake joint.'"

  He liked the bit, saying: "that was the joke, because the No. 1 question we get about 'Pineapple Express' is, 'What kind of research did you guys do?'"

  Franco said he was disappointed that the cameras went wide.

  "I think they killed the joke," he said.

  So what was really in the bag?

  "I don't know! MTV gave it to us."

• Stone Temple Pilots reunite in Los Angeles

  LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Reunited rock group Stone TemplePilots, a band that never got much respect during its heyday,played its first show in almost eight years on Monday, taking afew hundred fans on a nostalgic trip to the '9

  The Los Angeles foursome, fronted by ill-starred singerScott Weiland, performed a half-dozen hits during a 30-minuteset at a bucolic setting in the Hollywood Hills.

  "I wish I was here at this party," Weiland, 40, saidbetween songs, a wistful reference to the free alcohol and hotdogs that fueled the radio-station contest winners and usualindustry denizens.

  The band has reunited for a 65-date tour of North Americanamphitheaters that kicks off May 17 at the Rock on the Rangefestival in Columbus, Ohio. Reunion plans were already in theworks before Weiland's ouster last week from Velvet Revolver,the "supergroup" he ditched Stone Temple Pilots for in 2003.

  Tunes performed Monday included opener "Big Empty,""Vasoline" and "Interstate Love Song," all drawn from STP'ssecond album, 1994's "Purple."

  Weiland, backed by brothers Dean and Rob DeLeo, on guitarand bass, respectively, and drummer Eric Kretz, was in strongvoice and a chatty mood.

  STP, often dismissed as clones of Seattle grunge rockersPearl Jam, released five studio albums between 1992 and 2001,racking up an impressive array of hit singles. In later years,the band's ability to promote the discs was hampered byWeiland's snowballing drug and legal problems.

  STP last toured in 2002, playing about a dozen shows topromote its final album, "Shangri-La Dee Da."

  Weiland enjoyed a second act with Velvet Revolver, whichwas founded by three former members of Guns N' Roses. Its debutalbum, 2004's "Contraband," was a surprise hit and yielded aGrammy. But sales for last year's follow-up, "Libertad," weredisappointing.

  Weiland was given his walking papers last week, with theband citing his "increasingly erratic on-stage behavior andpersonal problems."

  Weiland angrily countered that his bandmates were"discontents" engaged in a "a blatant and tired excuse to coverup the truth," which was that the band had not been gettingalong for some time.

  On the other hand, Weiland said his STP colleagues "havealways had my back."
