Downey, Galifianakis go on the road in `Due Date'
LAS VEGAS – Robert Downey Jr. loves the mayhem Zach Galifianakis perpetrates on screen. Galifianakis loves the way Downey responds to his mayhem.

Downey, who refreshed his comedy skills with an Academy Award-nomina
ted role in 2008's "Tropic Thunder," and Galifianakis, one of the breakout stars of last year's "The Hangover," hit the road as mismatched traveling companions in this fall's "Due Date."

"To me, the funniest part about the movie is Robert's reactions to things," Galifianakis said alongside Downey in an interview at last week's ShoWest convention for theater owners, where distributor Warner Bros. previewed footage of "Due Date." "There's antics that I do, but any time you go to Robert's face, that to me is the real great thing about this."

The latest from "The Hangover" director Todd Phillips, "Due Date" casts Downey as a first-time dad forced to hitch a ride with a wannabe actor (Galifianakis) to make it home in time for the birth of his baby.

Phillips won ShoWest's award as director of the year, while Galifianakis was named the convention's comedy star of the year — a well-deserved honor, according to Downey.

"I've never worked with anyone like ZG, because there's no telling what he might do," Downey said. "Just because you're on set doesn't mean that's where the scene's going to go, which to me is even a step beyond my own managed insanity. But it's not because he's not contained. He's just completely free."

"No one is really the straight man in this movie," added Downey, "but I am kind of like this stick that's pounded into the ground, that I think a lot of people can relate to."

Before their "Due Date," both actors are back on screen this summer, Downey with his superhero sequel "Iron Man 2," Galifianakis in Steve Carell's comedy "Dinner for Schmucks."

Galifianakis said he expects to begin work this fall on the sequel to "The Hangover," while Downey said he aims to suit up for a third "Iron Man" flick.

For "Due Date," the actors and their director got to have fun with some parent issues, both on camera and off.

"Todd and I, who probably have real father issues, ganged up on Zach," Downey said. "He comes from a relatively healthy family, and by virtue of his relative healthiness, we attacked him."

"That's exactly right," Galifianakis agreed. "The way I really would describe it is two alpha males raised by Michael Vick who decided to get into the film business."

Jamie Foxx adds "Due Date" to schedule
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Jamie Foxx is joining the cast of "Due Date," a road-trip comedy from "The Hangover" director Todd Phillips.

Foxx joins Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis
in the Warner Bros. movie about a high-strung father-to-be (Downey) who's forced to hitch a ride with a college slacker (Galifianakis) to make it to the birth on time.

Foxx will play Downey's longtime pal who once dated his wife (Michelle Monaghan) and secretly keeps in touch with her.

Foxx next stars in the thriller "Law Abiding Citizen" and recently wrapped the romantic comedy "Valentine's Day."

Review: 'Due Date' road trip feels endless
Robert Downey Jr. is miserable, stuck on a cross-country drive with a creepy Zach Galifianakis in the comedy "Due Date." And it's easy to imagine how he feels: It's often torturous just sitting through the movie, and we're not
the ones trapped in the middle of Texas with the guy.

From the commercials alone, though, it's clear we're probably going to be in trouble here: They cut away early and often to a French bulldog in all his smushy-faced, bat-eared adorableness. When you need to go to the dog for easy, reliable laughs, there's something wrong with your script — and this is coming from a dog person.

That script comes from director Todd Phillips, hot off the success of "The Hangover," and three other writers. But "Due Date" lacks the consistent hilarity and originality of that last-summer hit; it's got some individual laughs here and there but lacks sufficient story or character development to hold the whole endeavor together.

And it's not as if "Due Date" were all that complicated — it shouldn't have been so difficult to get right. It's a simple mismatched-buddy road trip movie, the kind you've seen countless times before. Downey plays Peter Highman, a stylish, uptight architect whose wife (Michelle Monaghan) is about to give birth to their first child. Galifianakis plays Ethan Tremblay, a clueless aspiring actor Peter bumps into, literally, at the airport in Atlanta.

Through a series of massive contrivances — the kind that plague the entire journey — Peter and Ethan are kicked off the plane, placed on the no-fly list and forced to share a rental car all the way back to Los Angeles. This includes a stop for Ethan to pick up some medical marijuana for his "glaucoma," a major car accident, an awkward afternoon with Peter's wife's ex-boyfriend and an unplanned and unwise excursion across the Mexican border at night.

These side trips can be amusing for the casting choices alone, which are often inspired. But they also make you wonder, how could that possibly happen? And: Why would anyone do that? And: Will Ethan ever resemble a real person who exists on this planet? He's more like a cluster of idiosyncrasies — he orders waffles at the Waffle House, even though he's allergic to waffles, for example. He masturbates to fall asleep even though Peter is sitting in the front seat of the car right beside him (cue the cutaway to Ethan's dog doing the same thing). He's simultaneously high-maintenance and socially inappropriate. The comparison has been made between "Due Date" and "Planes, Trains & Automobiles," but it's actually got more "Rain Man" in it: Peter has his perfect life upended by a demanding, overgrown child with a heart of gold (or so we're meant to believe — Ethan's more annoying than anything else).

Galifianakis has made a career out of playing variations on this character: a weird guy who says and does all the wrong things but probably means well deep down. Usually, the shtick works, as it did in "The Hangover" and in Galifianakis' own online talk show "Between Two Ferns." But there's a fine line between making people feel intentionally uncomfortable for the sake of comedy and being just plain unpleasant, and he crosses it this time. You would not want to drive down the street with this guy, much less across the country, which makes "Due Date" feel interminable.

Downey does as much as he can with his underwritten, straight-man role — even as "Due Date" veers from slapstick to feel-good — simply because he's such a smart, clever actor. Even though he's called upon to do some unlikable and even cruel things, he's fascinating to watch through his sheer magnetism, and through a screen presence that always offers the promise of the unexpected.

"Due Date" also goes some places you wouldn't expect. But you might not want to go along for the ride.

"Due Date," a Warner Bros. Pictures release, is rated R for language, drug use and sexual content. Running time: 95 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Gillian Anderson is expecting her second child with boyfriend Mark Griffiths, the actress' rep confirms to E! News.
No due date has yet b
een revealed and it's unclear how far along the once and future Dana Scully is.
This will be the second child for Anderson and Griffiths, who already have 19-month-old son Oscar. She also has a 13-year-old daughter, Piper, from her personal ex-file, former husband Clyde Klotz.
One due date the 39-year-old mother-to-be has nailed down, however, is that of her highly anticipated film, X-Files: I Want to Believe, due out July 25.

"Hangover" star Galifianakis considers next move
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Zach Galifianakis is in one of the biggest hits of the summer, "The Hangover." Now he's being very careful before he orders his next drink.

The actor's name has
surfaced in connection with at least three projects, those familiar with the situation have said: Todd Phillips' pregnancy-themed comedy "Due Date"; the laugher "Say Uncle"; and another Phillips project, the supernatural comedy "Man-Witch." All three are set up at Warner Bros.

In addition, there's a Warners-ballyhooed sequel to the Phillips-directed "Hangover," which could put the same cast of characters in newly outrageous situations -- and could bring back Galifianakis.

Of the two Phillips projects, one is reminiscent of "Hangover," while the other would take him in a different direction.

"Due Date" centers on a slacker who hits the road with an uptight businessman; like "Hangover," it features a road trip and a baby among its plot lines.

But "Man-Witch," a project to which Jack Black once was attached, is an entirely different animal: It centers on a man who finds he has supernatural talents -- a discovery that leads him to attend an all-girls witch school.

The three movies have been presented in Hollywood circles as Galifianakis projects (in order to attract other cast members), but the actor has yet to commit to any of them.

Typically, an actor will make a new deal just before his new movie comes out, or -- in the case of a film that's expected to be a hit -- not long after.

The success of "Hangover," which has earned $204 million in five weeks of domestic release, was expected to prompt a flurry of deals. And indeed, one of the film's other stars, Bradley Cooper, signed on for a plum role in 20th Century Fox's reboot of "The A-Team" shortly after "Hangover" became a hit.

Galifianakis, though, has been far more deliberate.

Many moviegoers discovered him at multiplexes this summer, but he's hardly a newcomer. The 39-year-old North Carolina native is well known on the stand-up circuit for his offbeat brand of humor, and he has done a number of Comedy Central specials.

But it was his role as a dazed slacker in "Hangover," in which he famously walks through part of the movie with a baby strapped to his chest, that vaulted him to stardom.
