Statler Brothers: Country Hall of Fame honor tops
STAUNTON, Va. - Brothers Harold and Don Reid of the country and gospel group the Statler Brothers are coming clean about which career award meant the most.
"This one has knocked us on our behinds," Don Reid told The Associated
Press about the group's induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. "The Hall of Fame is the capper to a career that we are proud of."
Harold Reid says the honor, to be bestowed Sunday in Nashville, makes their career worthwhile.
"It wraps up everything you did," he said. "Every song you wrote. Every performance you did. Every TV show. Everything that we did that made a contribution to the business. They looked at us and said thank you for the contribution. It doesn't get any better than that."
Aside from the Harold and Don Reid, The Statler Brothers' Phil Balsley, Jimmy Fortune, and the late Lew DeWitt will also be honored.
The Statler Brothers were first hired as a vocal backing group by Johnny Cash. They had their first hit in 1965 with "Flowers on the Wall." They had several more Top 40 hits through the 1970s and 1980s, including "The Class of '57," "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine" and "I'll Go to My Grave Loving You."
Tom T. Hall will also be inducted Sunday. He's best known as a songwriter who jump-started his solo career following Jeannie C. Reilly's No. 1 hit with his "Harper Valley PTA." Hall was a top touring and radio act in the '70s, and has written children's songs, several novels and produced a PBS special on bluegrass music.
Fellow members of the 2008 Hall of Fame class Emmylou Harris and the late Ernest V. "Pop" Stoneman were inducted on April 27.

Why did Randy Quaid get a Walk of Fame star in 2003, but three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Pfeiffer didn't get hers until 2007? More importantly, why did Randy Quaid get a star at all?

The Walk of Fame is a publicity game. A movie studio or, sometimes, a fan club, applies for those plaques on the celebrity's behalf. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then meets in secret once a year to consider applications, and much of the selection process is also never disclosed.
Once the honorees are picked, the celebrities or, more likely, their studios or fan clubs, must pay a $25,000 "sponsorship fee" to the chamber before the star can be installed on the Walk of Fame. In other words, a celebrity's level of achievement can easily be trumped by an ambitious—and rich—publicity campaign.
Oh, and Randy Quaid? Got his first Oscar nom 16 years before Pfeiffer.

Gallstones force Eric Clapton to nix NYC concert
NEW YORK – Eric Clapton has pulled out of this week's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert in New York after undergoing gallstone surgery.

Kristen Foster, a publicist for the guitarist, said Tuesday that Clapton was
doing well and recuperating with his family in England.

The hall says Jeff Beck will replace the 64-year-old guitarist for Friday night's show at Madison Square Garden.

Clapton was to perform as part of a two-night celebration in honor of the hall's 25th anniversary. Beck now joins U2, Aretha Franklin and Metallica for the final night.

The Thursday lineup includes Crosby, Stills and Nash; Stevie Wonder; and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. HBO will air the concerts Nov. 29.

Clapton's Web site says he remains committed to his 2010 concert schedule.

Ailing Eric Clapton pulls out of NY concert
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Eric Clapton has pulled out of this week's Rock and Roll Hall concert extravaganza in New York to have gallstones removed, organizers said on Monday.

as up in the air, meanwhile, after the rocker abruptly canceled a concert in Kansas City on Monday due to a bereavement.

Clapton, 64, "will spend time recuperating at home in the UK and is very sorry to disappoint the fans and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame," a statement said.

It added that his tour itinerary was otherwise unaffected.

The guitarist was scheduled to perform at Madison Square Garden on Friday, the second of a two-night celebration of the hall's 25th anniversary. Others on the bill include U2, Aretha Franklin, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne and Annie Lennox.

The concert is not related to the annual Hall of Fame induction, which takes place in New York next March.

Springsteen, 60, is scheduled to perform on Thursday. But he canceled Monday's show "due to a death in Bruce's immediate family," according to his Web site.

Kansas City broadcaster KMBC-TV quoted police officials as saying that a 34-year-old member of Springsteen's road crew died at his hotel, but that the death was not suspicious.

Neither concert officials nor Springsteen's publicist were immediately available for comment.

Others on the Thursday bill include Simon and Garfunkel, Stevie Wonder, Sting and B.B. King.

Kiss, Genesis, Chili Peppers Rock hall contenders
DETROIT (Billboard) – KISS, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Genesis, the Hollies, LL Cool J and Jimmy Cliff are first-time contenders for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, organizers said Wednesday.

Five of the 12 nominees will be chosen for induction from ballots cast by more than 500 music industry voters. An announcement of the inductees is expected in January, and the Hall's 25th annual induction ceremony will take place March 15 at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City. Broadcast plans have not yet been announced.

Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith told Billboard.com that "it's a real honor to be nominated in our first year of eligibility. Obviously the Hall of Fame has excellent musical taste."

But the year's big story could turn out to be KISS, which has been eligible since 1999 but, like shock-rock predecessor Alice Cooper, has famously been snubbed by the Hall's nominating committee and has made some harsh comments about the organization in the past.

But co-founder Paul Stanley said he and partner Gene Simmons would face a dilemma over which of their former bandmates should join them.

"There's been a lot of people who've been a part of this, some longer than others .. and some who deserve recognition more than others," Stanley explained. "Even the non-makeup years produced some platinum and double-platinum albums, and we had some very healthy sales in terms of albums and concerts through the '80s and '90s. So if we should ever be asked to accept induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it would be something to think about."

The ballot lists the four founding members of KISS -- Stanley and Simmons alongside Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.

Hollies co-founder Graham Nash is already in the Hall of Fame with Crosby, Stills & Nash (1997), but said he was "very thrilled" to hear about the Hollies nomination.

"There's a long way form here to actually being inducted," noted Nash, who was with the group from 1962-68. "I truly believe the Hollies deserve to be inducted. They were a large part of the early history of what we know as rock 'n' roll. I would be particularly thrilled for (retired lead singer) Allan Clarke. That's where my heart goes. I'm already in there, but it would be a thrill for me to see it happen for" the Hollies.

Artists are eligible for induction 25 years after their first single or album release. While the ballots are being mailed to voters, the Hall of Fame is also preparing for its 25th anniversary concerts on October 29-30 at New York's Madison Square Garden, along with the release of a nine-DVD boxed set, "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Live," and the publication of a book, "The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: The First 25 Years."
