'Kick-Ass' fights way to box office top spot
LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Foul-mouthed superhero comedy "Kick-Ass," starring Nicolas Cage and a host of pint-sized crime fighters, beat down competitors to top the North American box office, final figures showed Monda

For the second weekend in a row, the number one and two box office spots reported in initial Sunday figures switched places by the time final earnings were released Monday.

That gave "Kick-Ass," which opened this weekend with 19.8 million dollars in ticket sales, an edge over animation adventure "How to Train Your Dragon," box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said.

Critically-acclaimed "Dragon" was relegated to second place with an only slightly smaller take of 19.6 million dollars, bringing the total for the DreamWorks' fantasy about a young Viking who tames a dragon to 158 million dollars in its four-week run.

Slapstick "Date Night," starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell as a jaded married couple who land in a series of explosive situations after a rare romantic evening without their children, fell to the third spot with 16.7 million dollars.

Another comic newcomer, "Death at a Funeral," featuring a wealth of African American Hollywood talent, including stand-up stars Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Tracy Morgan, held the fourth position after bringing in 16.2 million dollars in its first weekend.

Greek mythology film "Clash of the Titans" -- a critically-panned blockbuster based on the exploits of Perseus and his battles with the serpent-haired Medusa and a fearsome sea monster -- crashed from last weekend's number one to the fifth spot with 15.4 million dollars in ticket sales.

"The Last Song," a romantic teen-targeted Miley Cyrus flick, fell to sixth place in its third week in theaters with 5.9 million dollars, while melodrama "Why Did I Get Married Too?" by writer, director, and actor Tyler Perry came in seventh with 4.1 million dollars in receipts.

Eighth place went to the live-action version of Lewis Carroll's classic "Alice in Wonderland" starring Johnny Depp, which took 3.6 million dollars to raise its total earnings to 324 million dollars, while time-bending R-rated comedy "Hot Tub Time Machine," fell to ninth, earning 3.5 million dollars.

"The Bounty Hunter," a lackluster comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, came in tenth with a 3.2-million-dollar take.

"Date Night" battles "Titans" at box office
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – The battle for supremacy at the North American box office this weekend amounts to the clash of a titanic 3D holdover and a new comedy for the date-movie crowd.

The appropriately t
itled "Date Night" should appeal to couples and fans of stars Steve Carell and Tina Fey. A bow in the range of $23 million-$27 million looks likely. That could be enough for the Fox release to lead the field.

On the other hand, don't expect "Clash of the Titans" to give up the No. 1 spot without a fight. After topping the rankings last weekend with $61.2 million, the Warner Bros. action-fantasy is likely to suffer a big drop. But even a 60% decline would fetch nearly $25 million.

"Date Night," directed by Shawn Levy (the "Night at the Museum" films), targets a broad swath of adult moviegoers with its tale of a suburban couple's accidental walk on the wild side. Early reviews have been promising.

Studios executives see the market as ripe for a new comedy with the most recent one, MGM's R-rated "Hot Tub Time Machine," entering its third weekend in release. "This is the first straight-ahead comedy for everyone in a while," Fox distribution president Bruce Snyder said.

Among this weekend's limited openers, both in 10 markets, Anchor Bay releases the horror thriller "After.Life" -- boasting a cast including Liam Neeson and a scantily clad Christina Ricci; and Screen Media debuts the Benjamin Bratt drama "La Mission."

'Clash' fights off 'Date Night' to top box office

"Date Night," also starring "The Office" actor Steve Carell, follows a jaded married couple embroiled in wacky situations and explosive danger after embarking on a rare romantic evening without their children. It took in 25.2 million dollars for the second spot.

The animated adventure film "How to Train Your Dragon" was in third place, pulling in 24.8 million dollars, while the African-American melodrama "Why Did I Get Married Too?" by writer, director, and actor Tyler Perry, came in a distant fourth with 11 million dollars in receipts.

"The Last Song," a romantic teen-targeted Miley Cyrus flick, fell to fifth place in its second week in theaters with 9.8 million dollars in ticket sales.

Sixth place went to time-bending R-rated comedy "Hot Tub Time Machine," earning 5.4 million dollars, while the live-action version of Lewis Carroll's classic "Alice in Wonderland" starring Johnny Depp, which has earned nearly 319 million total, took 5.3 million dollars this weekend for the seventh spot.

Animated "Dragon" slays North American box office
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Animated family movie "How to Train Your Dragon" slayed audiences this weekend, ousting "Alice in Wonderland" from its three-week run at the top of the North American box office
, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

The Dreamworks Animation 3-D movie about a hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons collected $43.3 million during the three days beginning on Friday.

Disney's psychedelic adventure "Alice in Wonderland" was pushed into second place with $17.3 million, while new raunchy comedy release "Hot Tub Time Machine," starring John Cusack, earned $13.6 million for third place.

"How to Train Your Dragon" won rave reviews for its endearing characters and special effects and was the third big box office success for a 3-D movie after "Alice" and record-breaking sci-fi fantasy "Avatar."

"How to Train Your Dragon" was released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc. "Hot Tub Time Machine" was released by privately held Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer. "Alice in Wonderland" was released by Walt Disney Co.

The animated adventure "How to Train Your Dragon" was in third place, pulling in 25.3 million dollars, while the African-American melodrama "Why Did I Get Married Too?" by writer, director, and actor Tyler Perry, came in a distant fourth with 11 million dollars in receipts.

"The Last Song," a romantic teen-targeted Miley Cyrus flick, fell to fifth place in its second week in theaters with 10 million dollars in ticket sales.
