'Inglourious Basterds' lands at TNT
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Quentin Tarantino's Nazi revenge fantasy "Inglourious Basterds" has found a basic cable home at TNT, where it will premiere in 2012.

The license fee is expected to b
e about $15 million, based on the standard formula of 12% of the domestic box office tally. Ticket sales to date stand at almost $115 million.

The film was co-financed by the Weinstein Co and Universal Pictures.

`Inglourious Basterds' bursts to No. 1 with $38M
LOS ANGELES – "Inglourious Basterds" scalped the competition at the box office this weekend, opening at No. 1 with more than $38 million.

Quentin Tarantino's revisionist World War II adventure about Jewish American
soldiers who hunt down and scalp Nazis took over the top spot from the sci-fi thriller "District 9." It was by far the director's best opening yet.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com:

`Inglourious Basterds' 1 of many tricky titles
LOS ANGELES – Quentin Tarantino isn't saying why he spelled the title of his World War II adventure, "Inglourious Basterds," the way he did.

The writer-director is enjoying having a little fun with his audience, si
milar to the way he credited himself and Uma Thurman, with whom he co-wrote the "Kill Bill" movies, by their initials Q and U.

"I'm never going to explain that," Tarantino said during a news conference in May at the Cannes Film Festival, where "Inglourious Basterds" premiered. "When you do an artistic flourish like that, to describe it, to explain it, would just ... invalidate the whole stroke in the first place.

"(Artist Jean-Michel) Basquiat takes the letter L from a hotel room door and sticks it in his painting," he added. "If he describes why he did it, he might as well not have done it at all."

Tarantino's film about Jewish-American soldiers who hunt down and scalp Nazis, which opened this past weekend atop the box office with an estimated $37.6 million, is one of several in recent memory with a name that's tripped people up, either because of its spelling or because it contains a potentially offensive word.

The Weinstein Co., which is distributing it in the United States, says it hasn't heard of any censorship of the title — which has nothing to do with a 1978 Italian action picture called (and correctly spelled) "The Inglorious Bastards."

But when "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" came out last fall, it prompted protests about the title across the country. Commercials during Los Angeles Dodgers games were eventually dropped at the team's request, and the city of Philadelphia rejected posters for its bus stops. In some instances, the Kevin Smith comedy about best friends who make an X-rated movie to pay the bills was just called "Zack and Miri."

Then there was the content of the posters, which initially were considered too risque because they suggested a specific sexual act. The Weinstein Co., which also released this movie, later changed them to feature stick figures representing its stars, some of which read: "Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks made a movie so outrageous that we can't even tell you the title."

The need to tinker with a tricky title has also arisen lately on television. DirecTV refers to the Oxygen weight-loss series "Dance Your Ass Off" as "Dance Your A.. Off." Similarly, the Showtime documentary series featuring comics Penn Jillette and Teller is listed on the satellite guide as "Penn & Teller: Bulls...!" and it appears in other places as "Penn & Teller: BS!"

For all the trouble, having a curse word in the title doesn't necessarily create more buzz for a movie, said publicist Alex Klenert. As an executive at ThinkFilm in 2005, Klenert worked on a documentary about the origin and many creative uses of the F-word (which was also the title of the film), and "Awesome: I F----- Shot That," in which the Beastie Boys gave cameras to fans who shot footage of a 2004 concert at New York's Madison Square Garden.

In both cases, "for what we had to do with the movie, it created another layer of extra work we had to do to position the film in certain markets, especially regionally," Klenert said. "With the Beastie Boys documentary, they just were not going to use (the F-word) in it. If you put it in theaters across the country, you can't have a theater with a child walking in with a poster that says (the F-word) on it."

Instead, some posters and many reviews referred to the film as "Awesome: I ... Shot That!" or they partially blurred out the expletive. The posters for the documentary about the offending word, meanwhile, featured a cartoon man with his bulging eyes forming some of the letters.

"Ultimately, it creates more trouble than it's worth because you have to edit it on a certain level," Klenert said.

He added that he saw a lot more attention and excitement for 2005's "The Aristocrats," a documentary about a famously profane joke with an ironically genteel punch line.

"We had sold-out theaters," he said. "That was a better example of a film that created buzz. It didn't necessarily have it in the title but it was all about the subject matter and how dirty the swear words were."

As for Tarantino's unusual spelling, "that's just the way he is," says Klenert. "He has such a unique vision, people are more accepting of it because it's him."

The tricky phrasing hasn't seemed to trouble many people on Twitter, where "Inglourious Basterds" was a top trending topic on opening day Friday. Although, as one user joked: "Tarantino created `Inglourious Basterds' simply to watch Twitter go into fits about its spelling."

'Inglourious Basterds' takes box office top spot
LOS ANGELES (AFP) – "Inglourious Basterds," the latest stylized action flick from director Quentin Tarantino, took the top spot at the North American box office this weekend, initial figures showed Sunday.

p>Starring Brad Pitt, the film, about a Jewish-American roving militia that kills and scalps Nazis, earned 37.6 million dollars in its first week of release, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

Falling to second place was "District 9," which tells the story of a race of extraterrestrial refugees who are granted asylum in South Africa but have to fight off a nefarious corporation seeking to harness their alien technology.

The well-reviewed action thriller earned 18.9 million dollars in box office receipts in its second week of release.

Also falling one place was "G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra," which took the number three spot in its third week in theaters. The action movie based on the popular toy franchise pulled in 12.5 million dollars over the weekend.

"The Time Traveler's Wife," starring Rachel McAdams as the wife of a man with a genetic anomaly that means he moves back and forward through time involuntarily, earned the number four spot, with receipts of 10 million dollars in its second week of release.

At the number five spot was "Julie and Julia," a movie about famed cook Julia Child, who is known for introducing French cooking to Americans, and Julie Powell, a woman who spends a year cooking recipes from Child's most famous cookbook.

In its third week in theaters, the feature starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, earned nine million dollars.

In at number six was new release "Shorts," which tells the story of a boy who discovers a magic wishing stone. The family movie earned 6.6 million dollars in box office receipts.

Down two spots to number seven was "G-Force," an action-comedy about a crack squad of guinea pig spies, which earned 4.2 million dollars. A host of Hollywood stars, including Penelope Cruz and Steve Buscemi, voiced characters in the movie, which has taken in 107.3 million dollars in five weeks.

In its sixth week of release, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth installment of the franchise, fell one spot to number eight, earning 3.5 million dollars.

The feature, which sets the stage for the final confrontation between the boy wizard and his arch-nemesis Lord Voldemort, has taken in 290.3 million dollars since its release.

At number nine was "The Ugly Truth," starring Katherine Heigl as a romantically challenged producer looking for love, which took in 2.9 million dollars in its fifth week in theaters.

Rounding out the top 10 was "Post Grad," a comedy about a college graduate who moves back in with her eccentric family while she tries to find a job, which earned 2.8 million in its first week in theaters.

"Inglourious Basterds" — If only Quentin Tarantino the director weren't so completely in love with Quentin Tarantino the writer, this might have been a great movie rather
than a good movie with moments of greatness. Everything that's thrilling and maddening about his films coexists and co-mingles here: the visual dexterity and the interminable dialogue, the homage to cinema and the drive to redefine it, the compelling bursts of energy and the numbingly draggy sections. And then there is the violence, of course: violence as a source of humor, as sport, violence merely because it looks cool on camera, and because the 46-year-old Tarantino still has the sensibilities of a 12-year-old boy. "Inglourious Basterds" also reflects the discipline, or lack thereof, of an adolescent — one who's never been told "no." Certain scenes of his wildly revisionist World War II saga have a palpable tension, but then he undermines them by allowing them to go on way too long. As for the plot ... well, it might be in there somewhere amid the many meandering threads. The film follows a band of Jewish American soldiers, led by twangy Tennessean Lt. Aldo Raine (a hilarious Brad Pitt), who hunt Nazis. Tarantino also intertwines the stories of Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent), who fled to Paris and opened a movie theater after Nazis killed her family; Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), the Nazi colonel who orchestrated that attack; German movie star Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger), who's an undercover agent for the Brits; and Nazi war hero Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Bruhl), who's about to become a star by playing himself in a propaganda flick about his exploits. R for strong graphic violence, language and brief sexuality. 152 min. Two and a half stars out of four.

"Passing Strange The Movie" — It's easy to see why Spike Lee was drawn to Stew, the one-named musician and mastermind behind the Broadway production "Passing Strange." Like Lee, the artist formerly known as Mark Stewart possesses a powerful and singular voice, one he uses to express vividly his own experience of growing up black in America. And Lee has always shown a strong affinity for music in his films, as evidenced by his longtime collaboration with composer and jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard. In bringing Stew's Tony-winning "Passing Strange" to the screen, Lee took the wise and uncharacteristic step of staying out of the way — of letting the songs and the story play out without inserting himself into them. Lee shot two performances at New York's Belasco Theatre before the show closed, then shot it again without an audience. The result is so crisp and intimate, it makes you feel as if you're on stage with Stew (who narrates) and the rest of his formidable cast. The semi-autobiographical "Passing Strange" tells the story of a black Los Angeles teenager, known as Youth (Daniel Breaker), who struggles to find his artistic identity in the 1970s. Among the forces that shape him are his churchgoing mother (Eisa Davis) and the bohemians he meets in Amsterdam and Berlin (De'Adre Aziza, Colman Domingo, Chad Goodridge and Rebecca Naomi Jones in multiple roles). The coming-of age tale may sound familiar and the self-serious debates about creativity can grow repetitive. But the powerful and catchy rock songs, along with Stew's humorously pointed observations about race, make "Passing Strange" compelling and moving. Not rated but contains language, drug use and sexual content. 135 min. Three stars out of four.

"Post Grad" — This comedy about a driven, hardworking college student who can't find a job after she graduates actually might have been relevant. It might have been a satirical and insightful look into how our soured economy has dashed the dreams of a generation. Instead, it's a flat and tonally jumbled amalgamation of "Adventureland," "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Some Kind of Wonderful." In other words, it has no idea what it wants to be, and as a result it gets nothing right. Alexis Bledel maintains a steady level of wide-eyed pluckiness as Ryden Malby (a name that looks like an anagram), who just got out of school and dreams of working at a prestigious Los Angeles publishing house. When she doesn't get the job she applied for, she ends up back home in the San Fernando Valley with the kind of eccentric family you only find in the movies. Michael Keaton, as her dad, sells novelty belt buckles; Carol Burnett, as grandma, is obsessed with her own death; and Jane Lynch as her mother plays the straight woman for once, which isn't a whole lot of fun. Meanwhile, Ryden rebuffs the romantic advances of her best friend, the spineless and worshipful Adam (Zach Gilford), and instead enjoys a fling with her sexy Brazilian neighbor (Rodrigo Santoro), even though — duh — the guy she's supposed to be with has been right in front of her all along. Animation veteran Vicky Jenson ("Shrek," "Shark Tale"), directing her first live-action feature from a script by first-timer Kelly Fremon, awkwardly juggles all these subplots. She also squanders the comic presence of J.K. Simmons, Fred Armisen, Craig Robinson and Demetri Martin in minuscule supporting roles. PG-13 for sexual situations and brief strong language. 89 min. One star out of four.

"Shorts" — Robert Rodriguez mashes up "Shorts," fast-forwarding, rewinding, pausing and following tangential story lines. But the editing high jinks don't obscure that this family adventure film is essentially about a group of kids who end up with a "wishing rock," a rainbow-colored stone that grants the holder any wish. And as tends to happen with such things (be they oil lamps or monkey paws), trouble ensues. Rodriguez populates a Texas suburb with colorfully exaggerated characters, both kids and adults. All get their hands on the wishing rock, but it's the kids who know how to wish. The parents (highlighted by James Spader as Mr. Black, a flip corporate tyrant) are filled with worry and tethered to technology. Between stylish, often gruesome films, Rodriguez has made popular kids movies, most notably the "Spy Kids" trilogy. The director (who also, as usual, serves as writer, producer, co-editor, cinematographer and composer) draws heavily from his five children; the idea of "Shorts" was dreamed up by his son, Rebel. A good spirit pervades "Shorts," but it becomes too cartoonish, too scattered to register much. Somewhere around the time a giant booger runs riot through the town, one wishes for a bit more adult supervision. With William H. Macy, Leslie Mann and Jon Cryer. PG for mild action and some rude humor. 89 min. One and a half stars out of four.
