• Overture joins sci fi universe via teuton pic

  NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Dennis Quaid and Ben Fosterare in final negotiations to star in the sci-fi action film"Pandorum."

  "Pandorum" centers on mysterious events aboard an abandonedspace craft, with

  Quaid and Foster as crewmen who must figureout what has happened to them and to the planet they'reorbiting. German filmmaker Christian Alvart ("Case 39") isdirecting from a script he wrote with Travis Milloy.

  Overture Films will handle domestic rights to the film, thecompany's first sci-fi release. "Pandorum" is being produced byGermany's Constantin Film and its subsidiary Impact Pictures,the pair behind the "Resident Evil" franchise.

  Quaid, currently onscreen in "Smart People," next stars inthe football drama "The Express." Foster, who played a villainin last year's Western remake "3:10 to Yuma," will star in theupcoming military romance "The Messenger."

• Moviegoers to get sneak peek of 3D "Avatar" footage

  SAN DIEGO (Hollywood Reporter) – To stoke buzz for the sci-fi flick "Avatar," 20th Century Fox will take over as many Imax and 3D screens around the world as it can on August 21 to show 15 minutes of promotional

  footage, filmmaker James Cameron announced Thursday at the Comic-Con pop culture convention.

  The screenings, in a highly unusual move, will be offered free of charge to pave the way for the film, which opens in the U.S. on December 18.

  Cameron and Fox took the wraps off their pricey, visually splashy 3D movie at the San Diego Convention Center's Hall H on Thursday, to a deeply enthusiastic, if not over-the-top hysterical, crowd Thursday afternoon.

  Cameron warmed up the sci-fi-minded crowd by asking, "Who wants to go to another planet?" before rolling nearly 25 minutes of scenes from his otherworldly tale, which is set on the fictional planet of Pandorum.

  A few expositional scenes showing the main character, played by Sam Worthington, becoming an avatar (a blue-skinned human-alien hybrid) segued into a series of jungle battle scenes -- many of them of striking color and scope -- in which Worthington and co-star Zoe Saldana fight with prehistoric-looking creatures.

  The footage showed a vividly original world complete with its own language and ecology.

  "Everybody always asks, where have you been? Well, that's where I've been: Pandorum," said Cameron, who hasn't directed a narrative feature since 1997's "Titanic."

  The footage overlapped with but was not identical to the slightly shorter material that Fox showed at Cinema Expo in Amsterdam last month, the studio said.

  The stakes are high for Fox, which has made the December 18 film the cornerstone of its fall slate. The film is important enough to the studio that it was introduced by Fox Filmed Entertainment co-chairman Tom Rothman, who noted that "moments likes these are rare for a movie company."

  MYSTERY BUDGET

  At a news conference after the panel, Cameron acknowledged the studio's support, saying: "They wrote us a big check and were with us right down the line."

  How big a check has become one of the bigger Hollywood mysteries of the season. While some estimates have pegged the budget for "Avatar" in the $300 million range, Fox has stuck to a figure closer to $230 million.

  Cameron has faced a lot of talk about budgets ever since "Titanic," which went on to become the biggest worldwide box-office grosser in history with $1.8 billion, was released.

  If the "Avatar" footage didn't elicit the hysterical reactions from the Comic-Con faithful of the "New Moon" and "Alice in Wonderland" panels earlier in the day, that was understandable. The "Avatar" unspooling marks one of the rare times in recent Comic-Con memory that a film of this scale has not been based on a pre-existing property with a built-in fan base.

  That the film is an unknown quantity poses both an advantage and a disadvantage for Fox: While the movie comes without the benefit of prior awareness (and thus makes it a harder sell in the short run), it gives the studio a chance to shape perception in a way that remakes and sequels don't allow.

  The need to build awareness was behind Cameron's surprise announcement about screening footage for free in theaters in August.

  While the unusual move to give moviegoers a deeper look at the upcoming movie is an expensive gambit for the studio's marketing department, Fox clearly hopes it will show people what cannot simply be translated in a 2D trailer or in TV spots.

• Quaid Sues Over Old Loan

  Los Angeles (E! Online) - From Dennis Quaid's vantage point, it's time to collect.

  The veteran actor has filed a lawsuit against a New York man for failing to repay a $70,000 loan from seven years ago.

  Per the com

  plaint, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on July 29, Quaid claimed that he gave the hefty sum to the defendant, Steven Mendelson, on May 1, 2001. He charged him 6 percent annual interest on the unpaid principal balance that was secured by 200,000 shares of stock.

  The official deadline for full repayment of the note was scheduled for Nov. 2, 2003, but when Mendelson failed to pony up the dough, the suit contends that he was then in default and therefore obligated to pay the entire principal balance plus interest that had accrued.

  Five years on, the Big Apple native still hasn't come through and has refused to give the thesp even one penny.

  Quaid is seeking unspecified compensatory damages.

  When he's not looking out for his pocketbook, the Oscar nominee has been busy filming a trio of films due out in 2009.

  Among them is Legion, a biblical thriller about a group of strangers stranded in a remote truck stop diner in the Southwest who discover the diner's young waitress is pregnant with the messiah. He recently wrapped production on next summer's would-be blockbuster, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, in which he plays General Hawk. And he's currently filming Pandorum, a sci-horror flick about a pair of astronauts who wake up on their spaceship to find they have no memory of their mission or their identities.

• "Cloudy" retains box office lead with Surrogates in second

  LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The family cartoon "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" led the North American box office for a second weekend on Sunday while another slew of newcomers bombed amid crippling reviews and m

  oviegoer apathy.

  "Cloudy," a 3D animated feature based on a popular children's book, earned $24.6 million during the three days beginning Friday. The 10-day haul for the Columbia Pictures release stands at $60 million.

  The Bruce Willis robot thriller "Surrogates" opened at No. 2 with $15 million. The film's Touchstone Pictures distributor had hoped it would open at No. 1 but "Cloudy" enjoyed a bigger-than-expected hold. The cartoon lost just 19 percent of its audience, compared to a standard drop of about 50 percent.

  "Fame," a family-friendly remake of the 1980 musical, opened at No. 3 with $10 million. The low-budget film was released by cash-strapped studio MGM, which had hoped for an opening in the $15 million range.

  The Dennis Quaid sci-fi film "Pandorum" did even worse, opening at No. 6 with $4.8 million. Industry observers had expected an opening in the high-single-digits for the Overture Films release.

  The sub-par performances come a week after another bunch of newcomers -- "The Informant!," "Love Happens" and "Jennifer's Body" -- all suffered disappointing openings. Early fall is traditionally a quiet time at the box office as the studios quietly clear out their weaklings while laying the groundwork for their awards-season hopefuls.

• "Tin Cup" director signs up for "School"

  NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) – Ron Shelton is going back to the links.

  The director of "Tin Cup" and a veritable scorecard of sports movies has signed for "Q School," a golf comedy he will dire

  ct based on a script he co-wrote with "Cup" collaborator John Norville.

  Dennis Quaid and Tim Allen are eyeing starring roles in the indie project.

  "School" is described as a comedy in which hopefuls battle it out in a competition to make the PGA Tour, with both their game and their personal lives sometimes ending up in the drink along the way. The title is a reference to qualifying school, an annual tournament in which several hundred aspiring pros compete for a limited number of spots on the following year's tour.

  Shelton has had a run of Tom Watson-like proportions as the writer-director of sports movies. The former minor league baseball player made his directorial debut more than 20 years ago with 1988's landmark hardball comedy "Bull Durham." Four years later he helmed the Woody Harrelson/Wesley Snipes basketball movie "White Men Can't Jump."

  In 1996, Shelton and Norville paired for "Tin Cup," a more dramatic tale that starred Kevin Costner and earned $54 million at Warner Bros.

  Shelton also directed the 1999 boxing comedy "Play It to the Bone," a more modest performer. His most recent feature was the Harrison Ford cop comedy "Hollywood Homicide" in 2003. He and Norville also have been attached to adapt the Barry Bonds steroids expose "Game of Shadows" for HBO and have penned the baseball comeback tale "Our Lady of the Ballpark," an indie that's in development.

  Quaid is one of the stars of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and stars in the upcoming horror movie "Pandorum." Allen has anchored the "Santa Clause" franchise and starred in 2007 biker hit "Wild Hogs." The actor will make his directorial debut with the ex-con comedy "Crazy on the Outside."

  Golf comedies have been among the more successful subgenres in the sports comedy category, with such movies as "Caddyshack" and "Happy Gilmore" becoming box-office and pop-culture breakouts.
