• Giffin tackles temptation with wit in `Heart'

  "Heart of the Matter" (St. Martin's Press, 368 pages, $26.99), by Emily Giffin: Emily Giffin tackles a familiar literary topic — that of temptation — in her latest novel, "Heart of the Matter." It comes in the form

  of a dedicated single mother, Valerie Anderson, whose 6-year-old son is injured in a horrific accident.

  Dr. Nick Russo is a caring, virtuous and handsome pediatrician who is so sensitive and nurturing that when he and Valerie become attracted to one another, it seems natural and inevitable. Nick is married to Tessa, the love of his life, who is a stay-at-home mom to their two adorable children. Will Nick's commitment to his family be enough to stop him from succumbing to Valerie's charms? It's a well-worn plotline, and the book threatens to be another cheesy, chick-lit weeper.

  But Giffin has always been too intelligent to go down that path, and in "Heart of the Matter," she again uses her great wit and gift of storytelling to weave a tale that's nuanced, empathetic and, at times, heartbreaking, without the cliched villains and victims, and unnecessary melodrama. She also does it with her typical humor, and even brings back a few characters from her first novel, "Something Borrowed," as supporting players.

  Valerie and Nick don't set out to cheat on Tessa, and Tessa doesn't plan to drive away her husband. Everyone starts out with good intentions — and everyone knows where that can lead.

  Like real life, "Heart of the Matter" doesn't wrap up neatly: Decisions are made that are both troubling and understandable. That's one reason the book is so engaging. Giffin makes readers identify with the characters, even if they don't agree with their actions. Matters of the heart are always complicated, and Giffin deftly shows you why.

• Giffin: New novel is about marriage, motherhood

  NEW YORK – Emily Giffin writes about realistic relationships.

  Her stories aren't about vampires falling in love, but lifelike, flawed people experiencing believable situations. She's built an enthusiastic fan follo

  wing and has sold more than 5 million copies in the U.S. of her first four books.

  The 38-year-old author's first novel, "Something Borrowed," about a women who has an affair with her best friend's fiance, is being made into a movie starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson and John Krasinski.

  Her third book, "Baby Proof," is also being adapted for the big screen.

  Giffin's latest novel, "Heart of the Matter," follows two women whose lives intersect after a tragic accident.

  "The book is about motherhood and the mystery that is marriage. How it's very hard to understand someone else's marriage. ... And it's about the mistakes we make and how we never really see ourselves as the villain in our own life story despite how we sometimes can really hurt others," she said in a recent interview. "And ultimately it's about forgiveness."

  Giffin also talked about fan enthusiasm and how the characters changed the plot of "Something Borrowed."

  AP: What's it like to have "Something Borrowed" made into a movie?

  Giffin: There was a time when these characters only existed in my imagination. It's been so much fun and I've been very lucky that the director and the producers have been so inclusive, really generous to include me and ask my opinion which they do not need.

  AP: How long does it take you to write a novel?

  Giffin: Longer than I would like for sure (laughs). It's a very character-driven process for me. I have a vague sense of beginning, middle and end. But often that changes course as I get to know the characters in the same way that real people can surprise you.

  AP: So have you changed the plot of any of your books while you were writing them?

  Giffin: In "Something Borrowed," I had the sense that Dex was very much, to use an old-fashioned word, a cad. The kind of guy you would expect to have an affair in the days leading up to his wedding. As I wrote that story and got to know Rachel and Dex, I discovered their feelings for one another was sincere ... which in turn changed the course of the book. I originally anticipated Rachel ending up alone but as I got to know both the characters, I determined, "Who was I to get in the way of their love?" (Laughs.)

  AP: How do you feel about your fans?

  Giffin: I have very enthusiastic readers. And I'm so grateful for them. The enthusiasm that's coming along with "Something Borrowed" being made into a movie has been so much fun for example. And people do have very strong feelings. There's a lot of conversation on Facebook for example about the color of one actress' hair and how it does not jibe with the description in the book. I just think people get attached to these characters in the same way they're attached to friends and family. And even the ones who are making poor decisions and mistakes and hurting others, the reader doesn't abandon them.

  AP: Is it nerve-racking to have a book published and then wait for reaction from your readers?

  Giffin: In some ways it's hardest with the people closest to you because you can't always trust them to be completely honest. My mom, interestingly enough, loves everything that I ever write! You have to at some point accept you're not going to please everyone and be OK with that.

  AP: Do you ever have writer's block?

  Giffin: That's a ridiculous question! Of course I don't! No, I do. Of course. With anything in life there are moments when it's much more difficult. Calling it writer's block is very fancy but a lot of time it's sheer laziness in that writing is hard work even if you love it.

  AP: Any ideas for your next book?

  Giffin: I have thought about it but it's not formed enough to be interesting even if I were to tell you.

• Trip Down Memory Lane Turns Into A Bumpy Ride

  DEAR ABBY: Our oldest daughter is being married soon. When we pulled out our wedding album to show her our pictures, my mother-in-law, "Edith," started laughing and said she hoped our daughter's wedding would be bette

  r than ours was. Then she said our wedding had been "an embarrassment," and she wished she hadn't invited any of her friends to it!

  Abby, her son and I have been married more than 25 years. This was the first time Edith has ever mentioned my "awful" wedding. My father-in-law tried to shut her up, but she went on and on about how she should have stepped in and "helped."

  My husband and I think his mother should apologize, but she says we are being "too sensitive." My daughter is upset about it too.

  We want Edith to be a part of our daughter's wedding and festivities, but what kind of role should I allow her to have? I'm still angry and very, very hurt. -- MOTHER OF THE BRIDE IN MISSISSIPPI

  DEAR MOTHER OF THE BRIDE: Could your mother-in-law have had one too many when she came out with her insensitive and rude revelation? Face it, had she truly wanted to "help," it would have been as simple as her volunteering to do so.

  While an apology should be forthcoming, don't expect one. In labeling you "too sensitive," Edith was blaming the person whose face she had slapped for reacting.

  While your wish to have her be a part of your daughter's wedding is laudable, the role I strongly recommend she play would be a nonspeaking one such as providing "something old, something new, something borrowed or something blue." PERIOD.

  DEAR ABBY: My older brother, "Gabe," 51, lives in another state. He calls me and my other brother often, asking our advice and opinions on everything -- work, parenting and his relationships. His current relationship is like all the others have been. He either picks the wrong person or he IS the wrong person.

  What concerns me is that after torturing my brother and me for hours at a time, Gabe then calls our 70-year-old mother. He subjects her to long, circular conversations and never takes any of our advice.

  Despite our requests for him to stop burdening us all, especially Mom, Gabe persists. Mom is losing sleep, and she's very upset because Gabe is unhappy and because he talks to her long into the night. She doesn't want to hurt his feelings, but she's reached her limit.

  Gabe sought professional help a few years ago, when he was having the same problem with a different woman. After three years of therapy his therapist -- a priest -- refused to treat him because it seemed like Gabe wasn't listening.

  What can Mom do to get some peace but spare his feelings? I believe my brother has an emotional disorder, but he refuses to get help or take medication. -- OVERWHELMED IN NEW JERSEY

  DEAR OVERWHELMED: Gabe may indeed have an emotional problem. He may also be self-centered and in love with the sound of his own voice.

  You and your brother need to impress upon your mother that her health must come first. And she needs to impress upon Gabe that her bedtime is (blank) p.m. and she will not stay up beyond that time. If necessary, she should unplug her phone to make sure her sleep isn't interrupted.

  As long as Gabe has you, your brother and your mother to drain to the point of exhaustion, I hope you realize he won't seek the professional help he needs, so all of you need to finally draw the line.

• Swank swoops in for "Borrowed" rights

  LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Hilary Swank's 2S Films production company has picked up the screen rights to Emily Giffin's 2005 debut novel, "Something Borrowed," as well as its sequel, "Something Blue.

  "

  "Borrowed" centers on a Manhattan attorney who becomes involved with her best friend's fiance after her 30th birthday. "Blue," published a year later, told the same basic story but from the point of the view of the best friend, a shopaholic publicist.

  The project is a potential starring vehicle for Swank. 2S, which the actress heads with her producing partner, Molly Smith, has been busy acquiring material and developing it in-house since setting up shop at Alcon Entertainment in June. "Borrowed" is the first project that will be financed and developed at Warner Bros.-based Alcon.

  Giffin, a lawyer-turned-writer, also wrote the chick-lit books "Love the One You're With" and "Baby Proof."

• The Dames of Don

  Broadway welcomes Laura Linney and Linda Lavin, who play strong women created by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies.

  Something old, something new, something borrowed - and everything Margulies. That will

  be Manhattan Theatre Club's bill of fare at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre for the first half of 2010. Laura Linney and Linda Lavin are the back-to-back leading ladies, each playing a flinty female in otherwise-unrelated Donald Margulies plays.

  Time Stands Still, the new Margulies, lifted off first, presenting Linney as a fiercely committed photojournalist who, sidelined by a war injury, tries to get her personal-versus-professional priorities straight. Collected Stories, Margulies' 1996 Pulitzer runner-up, follows on its heels in April, with Lavin as a crusty, reclusive novelist whose personal history becomes best-selling fodder for a student she trusts and mentors.

  Uncommon women, all - and a feast for any self-respecting actress to perform.

  "A lot of it is just great writing and a fantastic context in which to work," says Linney. "It's not just the character. It's the whole world in which it's set and the people in it. She's one small part of this fantastic world that Donald has created."

  Margulies' advance work on the world of Time Stands Still was an unproduced screenplay he did on the legendary Robert Capa about 15 years ago. "That's where my fascination with photojournalists came from," he says.

  "With Donald's stuff, it's layer upon layer upon layer," Linney notes. "There's so much to tap into - such a lot of room in this work. You're so supported by the structure of the piece. You're part of a chorus, really. All his plays - there's no one lead. They're ensemble pieces. You feel like you're part of a quartet here."

  The three-ply support system for Linney's character's recovery includes her lover of nine years, a war correspondent who provides the words for her pictures (Brian d'Arcy James); her cynical editor (Eric Bogosian); and the latter's much-younger girlfriend (Alicia Silverstone), who comes in the invisible protective coating of a bimbo but isn't one.

  Fluff-against-grit gives Margulies the traction he wants. "Bringing disparate people together is part of the fun," he admits. "I do love contrast, and I like to be surprised by things that emerge from characters from whom we might not expect surprises."

  Collected Stories is a two-hander, again with contrasting females - something of a literary "All About Eve": Ruth Steiner (Lavin), an established short-story writer, is flung back into the public spotlight because of a piece of published "fiction" she relayed in confidence to a seemingly adoring student, Lisa Morrison (Sarah Paulson). Is it homage, or is it petty theft? Margulies will never tell. "No, I don't weigh in on this," he insists. "It's really up to audiences to discuss and debate."

  But he has left enough breadcrumbs for Lavin to have herself a feast. "I just love the way Donald Margulies writes," she declares. "He writes wonderful women." She should know. After all, this is the fourth time she has played Ruth, and she has directed two other Margulies women (in his Pulitzer Prize-winning Dinner With Friends) for her Red Barn Studio Theatre in Wilmington, NC. "When he writes, he writes with such passion. He writes poetically, but he also writes pragmatically. His dialogue is very realistic, very emotional and very educated."

  [PAGE]The inspiration for Collected Stories came from a man, Stephen Spender, who brought a case of plagiarism against a student. "What it inspired Donald to do was to look at the life of a writer and examine what happens when you, if you're not a trusting person, finally do trust someone with your story, and they go off and write your story as their first novel. If they take elements of your story and disguise it, it's still your story and not theirs. What he's looking at is, 'Whose life is it anyway?' How much are you allowed to take someone else's story and take liberties and say it's your story? My experience is that the audience is split down the middle."

  Linney qualifies as a Margulies muse on the basis of three productions and two plays. She did Sight Unseen, his other Pulitzer contender, twice, playing both female roles - an arts interviewer Off-Broadway, and the wronged heroine in its Broadway revival. "That first production was such a very special time in my life," she says. "I was right out of school. I had worked before that, but it was the first part I had originated. I was sublimely happy, and I learned so much. Then to go back to it 12 years later - what a great opportunity! This is what, hopefully, actresses get to do: go from ingénue to character actress. They get to grow up in the theatre."

  And where does Margulies find his inspiration for such strong, compelling women? He finds it at home - with his wife of 30 years, Lynn Street, a general internist in New Haven, where he teaches playwriting at Yale.

  "Mostly," he concedes, "it's actresses who comment on the roles I write for women. I've always been interested in smart, complicated women. I'm married to one.

  "My wife never ceases to challenge and move me. It's funny - people are always saying to me, 'You know, your women are so complex.' And I say, 'Yes, she is.'"
