Alexander Skarsgard joins cast of "Straw Dogs"
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Alexander Skarsgard is going from vampires to vicious locals.

The "True Blood" star has signed for a role in "Straw Dogs," Screen Gems' remake of Sam Pecki
npah's 1971 thriller.

Rod Lurie is directing the updated movie, in which a Hollywood screenwriter encounters hostility and bloody threats from locals in a small Southern town after he and his wife move there.

James Marsden is the lead. Skarsgard will play Charlie, described as a grizzled, athletic type.

Best known for playing Eric Northman in "Blood," also set in the South, the Swedish-born Skarsgard (son of actor Stellan Skarsgard) has had roles in the feature "Zoolander" and the HBO miniseries "Generation Kill."

Film, TV producer Daniel Melnick dies at 77
LOS ANGELES – Daniel Melnick, the producer who brought gutsy, smart movies like "Straw Dogs," "Network" and "Midnight Express" to the big screen, has died at his home in Los Angeles. He was 77.

His son, Peter, tell
s the Los Angeles Times that Melnick died Tuesday of multiple ailments. He had recently undergone surgery for lung cancer.

Melnick was head of production at MGM and Columbia, where he helped develop the divorce drama "Kramer vs. Kramer" and the nuclear suspense thriller "The China Syndrome."

Melnick also produced the 1960s spy-spoof television series "Get Smart" that starred Don Adams as bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart.

In addition to his son, Melnick is survived by his daughter, Gabrielle Wilkerson-Melnick, and two grandchildren.

Services will be private.

James Marsden joins "I Hop" comedy
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – James Marsden has signed on to star opposite Russell Brand in "I Hop," a live-action/computer-animated hybrid comedy.

Tim Hill, who directed the hybrid "Alvin and t
he Chipmunks," is pushing his resume into hipper territory with this tale of an out-of-work slacker (Marsden) who accidentally injures the Easter Bunny (voiced by Brand) and must take him in as he recovers. As Fred struggles with the world's worst houseguest, both will learn what it takes to finally grow up.

Marsden, who last appeared in Richard Kelly's "The Box," has two movies in the can. He appears in Neil LaBute's remake of the British ensemble comedy "Death at a Funeral," which opens in April, and then stars in "Straw Dogs," Rod Lurie's remake of the 1971 Sam Peckinpah thriller.

Actor sues Academy, claims false imprisonment
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – An actor who was denied entrance to the Oscars last month has sued the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for false imprisonment, claiming he and his wife were detained for hour
s without their consent.

Michael Avila, whose IMDb profile says he appears (under the name Michael AvMen) in the upcoming films "Battle: Los Angeles" and "Straw Dogs," claims in a lawsuit filed Friday that he and his wife Mandy were unlawfully imprisoned outside the ceremony after a ticket mix-up.

The Venezuela-born actor says his publicist (unidentified) arranged for him to attend the March 7 ceremony at the Kodak Theater and told him he could pick up his tickets once inside the venue. But when the Avilas arrived on the red carpet without tickets, they say they were "rushed away to an AMPAS detention center where they were held and questioned about how they had been able to get onto the red carpet."

Six hours later, they were transferred to the police station and released without any charges.

"Until approximately 10 p.m., Plaintiffs continued to be held against their will by AMPAS personnel, continued to be questioned, and continued to repeatedly request to be allowed to return to the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel," the complaint alleges. "At no point had Plaintiffs been arrested, been read their rights, or been allowed to contact legal representation to understand why they were being held against their will and badgered with all sorts of personal questions."

The lawsuit says the couple suffered "sustained injury to his and her body and shock and injury to their nervous system" and have been experiencing "humiliation, mental anguish and emotional and physical distress." They want $50 million in exemplary and punitive damages to punish the Academy.

AMPAS, which boasts about its extra-tight security at the Oscars, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
