• Review: `Tooth Fairy' full of smiles, cliches

  Just weeks after something dubbed a "squeakquel," we have a movie advertised with the tagline: "You can't handle the tooth." One quakes for the marketing that awaits us for "Marmaduke."

  Just as Hollywood has been digging

  through the superhero archives, it has also been marauding the cupboard of mythical childhood creatures — they come with a "built-in" audience, after all. Yes, following the big-screen exploits of elves and bedroom monsters, the Tooth Fairy was inevitably ready for its close-up.

  "Tooth Fairy" steals liberally from "Monsters Inc." and "Elf," among many others. It's very much what you'd expect: a tale of optimism overcoming disbelief; family fare with comical casting (Julie Andrews as a Fairy Godmother); a PG-rated "SNL" skit; The Rock in a tutu.

  But despite its predictability and pat Hollywood cliche, "Tooth Fairy" is mostly charming.

  Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) is Derek Thompson, a formerly skilled hockey player who, after injury, has wound up "a goon" — a bruiser whose muscle shields more talented players — on a minor league hockey team in Lansing, Mich. He's beloved by the fans, who chant his nickname "the Tooth Fairy" because of his ability for sending bicuspids flying.

  His overriding philosophy is akin to the early rounds of "American Idol": Dreams are nothing but delusion. He dashes the hopes of pip-squeak fans and very nearly ruins them for the two young children (Chase Ellison, Destiny Whitlock) of his girlfriend, Carly (Ashley Judd).

  In violation of "dissemination of disbelief" (Bill Maher be warned) he's summoned to Fairyland, where he's sentenced to two weeks of Tooth Fairy duty by Andrews' Fairy Godmother.

  Stephen Merchant, the spindly, googly-eyed comedian best known as Ricky Gervais' frequent collaborator, plays Derek's "case worker," and ushers him through fairy training. The spry, ever-grinning Merchant is a considerable boost to the film — he's innately funny.

  Billy Crystal (who also voiced one of the monsters in "Monsters Inc.") makes a cameo as an older fairy "with tenure," who outfits Derek with the tools of the trade: a shrinking potion, amnesia dust, an invisibility spray, a cat repeller.

  Johnson is perhaps ill suited to believably play a cynic. His enormous grin, even when in repose, is never far below the surface. He's also playing a character quite close to his footballer in "The Game Plan." Nevertheless, he's exceptionally winning.

  He knows enough about comedy (he's been an excellent "SNL" host) to make the joke on him. Comedy may be the movie realm (rather than action or, for now, drama) best for Johnson. He's like a human-sized Buzz Lightyear.

  That Derek should be neatly redeemed — and turned from Sean Avery into Sidney Crosby, to boot — is patently obvious and confirms the lack of ambition of "Tooth Fairy."

  Director Michael Lembeck (who helmed the second and third of the "Santa Claus" movies) shows little imagination in what could have been a quirkier, more interesting kids tale. He does direct surprisingly good hockey sequences, though, including an overhead shot of an airborne tooth.

  But movies that implore whether or not you can handle the tooth aren't to be picked apart like a dentist. Suffice to say, families could do a lot worse than spend some time with the toothy smiles of Johnson and Merchant.

  "The Tooth Fairy," a 20th Century Fox release, is rated PG for mild language, some rude humor and sports action. Running time: 101 minutes. Two stars out of four.

• Julie Andrews flies to "Tooth Fairy" role

  LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Julie Andrews has earned her wings.

  The actress will join Dwayne ("The Rock") Johnson and Ashley Judd in the family comedy "Tooth Fairy."

  Also on board are "Ex

  tras" star Stephen Merchant, who also co-created "The Office," and pro skateboarder Ryan Sheckler (MTV's "Life of Ryan").

  The 20th Century Fox film centers on Derek Thompson (Johnson), a minor-league hockey player whose nickname is the Tooth Fairy because of his ability to knock out opposing players' teeth. Judd plays his girlfriend.

  When he discourages a youngster, Derek is ordered to one week's hard labor as a real tooth fairy, complete with wings, magic wand and frilly tutu. Along the way, he rediscovers his forgotten dreams.

  Andrews will play Lily, a high-ranking, acerbic supervisor with the Tooth Fairy Department charged with overseeing Derek's stint as a tooth fairy. The 72-year-old British screen icon was last seen in the 2004 "Princess Diaries" sequel.

  Merchant plays Tracy, a socially awkward, low-level tooth fairy who has not yet earned his wings but is assigned to be Derek's case worker and trainer.

  Sheckler plays arrogant young hockey player Mick Donnelly, who makes a pit stop in the minor leagues before heading to the NHL and treats Derek like a has-been.

  Filming is set to begin in October in Vancouver with Michael Lembeck (the "Santa Clause" sequels) directing.

• "Tooth Fairy" not as painful as it looks

  LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Ever since Arnold Schwarzenegger terrorized a classroom of 5-year-olds in 1990's "Kindergarten Cop," it has become de rigueur for other cinematic strongmen to try to muscle

  in on the family-film market. But of all the heavyweight action heroes who have traded violent fight scenes for heart-tugging moments of family bonding, only Dwayne Johnson (the artist formerly known as "The Rock") seems entirely at ease in PG-rated surroundings.

  In such movies as "The Game Plan," "Race to Witch Mountain" and now "Tooth Fairy," Johnson establishes a comfortable rapport with his younger co-stars that's difficult to fake. It doesn't hurt that he feels little to no shame about sending up his macho screen image; in "Tooth," for example, he prances about in a pink tutu with the same enthusiasm that he displayed punching out bad guys in "The Rundown."

  Johnson's compulsively likable presence is the saving grace of "Tooth," almost diverting attention away from the film's muddled script (credited to five writers) and made-for-TV mise-en-scene. He'll certainly be the main draw for families who should turn up in decent numbers this weekend, driven by fond memories of "Game Plan" as well as a general dearth of fresh options for kid-friendly romps.

  Fusing elements of "The Santa Clause" and "The Mighty Ducks," "Tooth" casts Johnson as hockey player Derek Thompson, a once-promising phenom who has been mired in minor-league obscurity for years. Nicknamed "The Tooth Fairy" for his signature move -- a brutal body-check that always costs his opponent a tooth -- Derek spends more time in the penalty box than on the ice. Having given up long ago on his dream of stardom, he feels little guilt about shattering the hopes of others, even his girlfriend's (Ashley Judd) young daughter, who still believes in tiny fairies who steal into children's rooms in the middle of the night exchanging lost teeth for dollar bills. For daring to suggest that these enamel-obsessed sprites don't exist, Derek is charged with "disseminating disbelief" and promptly summoned to tooth-fairy headquarters, where he is outfitted with wings and a uniform and ordered to spend two weeks collecting kiddie teeth.

  Although Derek's misadventures as a tooth fairy are supposed to be the main draw, those sequences largely fall flat because of the film's reliance on predictable pratfalls and the lack of strong comic chemistry between Johnson and such supporting players as Stephen Merchant (co-creator of "The Office") and Billy Crystal. Surprisingly, "Tooth" is most successful when it keeps its reluctant hero grounded in the real world, wrestling with his disappointments or attempting to bond with his girlfriend's other child, a surly teenager with musical talent but no self-confidence. This story line isn't any less predictable than the rest of the movie, but Johnson's way with child actors makes it palatable.

  Thanks to Johnson, watching "Tooth" isn't as painful as dental surgery, but it's also not an experience you'll want to repeat.

  Capsule reviews of films opening this week:

  "Creation" — A pretty small film considering its huge themes — evolution vs. divinity, essentially, Darwin vs. God. Small actually benefits here in presenting what

  is, for many, a black-and-white debate about whether life on Earth developed through nature's random opportunism or the guiding hand of a supreme maker. Director Jon Amiel casts the matter in personal terms as Charles Darwin (Paul Bettany) wrangles with the book that would spread the theory, his own loss of faith over the death of a daughter (Martha West) the backdrop to his struggle. Darwin's chief conflict is what his theory means for his departed daughter and the conviction of her deeply religious mother (Bettany's real-life wife Jennifer Connelly) that the girl's soul lives on eternally. Bettany and newcomer West beautifully capture the sweet joys of a father and a bright, favored child, along with the momentous deprivation when she's no longer there. PG-13 for some intense thematic material. Running time: 108 minutes. Three stars out of four.

  "Extraordinary Measures" — This medical drama has been marketed as another "Blind Side," a true story about quiet heroism, doing the right thing and overcoming great odds. But imagine if "The Blind Side" had focused on the legal processes necessary for Michael Oher's adoption instead of the football and spunky Sandra Bullock and you have an idea of the strange path "Extraordinary Measures" takes on its road to inspiration. The movie tells the fictionalized story of the Crowley family, whose two youngest children are afflicted with Pompe disease, a metabolic disorder that leads to muscle degeneration and short life expectancy. The dad (Brendan Fraser) decides to fight for a cure, partnering with an eccentric scientist (Harrison Ford) to beat the clock and save his kids' lives. The filmmakers strangely focus on funding and paperwork instead of the human drama with a lot of time spent watching Ford and Fraser bicker and make investor presentations. The debut feature of CBS Films, who, next time, might want to deliver a film that veers a little farther from the kind of fare people can watch at home for free. PG for thematic material, language and a mild suggestive moment. 104 minutes. Two stars out of four.

• Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson eyes return to action

  MEXICO CITY – Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is ready to be back in action.

  The former pro wrestler says he's looking forward to returning to more physical roles after filming four family comedies. That includes his lat

  est, "Tooth Fairy," in which he wears tights and a pink tutu.

  Johnson says this year he'll film "Faster," an action flick directed by George Tillman and co-starring Billy Bob Thornton and Maggie Grace.

  Johnson spoke Monday while in Mexico City to promote "Tooth Fairy."

  He said it was unsettling to meet co-star and renowned British actress Julie Andrews for the first time while wearing his tooth fairy getup.

  Says Johnson: "She is a woman that you want to meet in a suit."
