• ABC evening news gets boost from Diane Sawyer

  LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – ABC's "World News" has held steady under new anchor Diane Sawyer.

  >In its first three days on the air last week, "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" averaged 8.6 million total viewers, up six percent from the newscast's season-to-date average under Sawyer's predecessor Charles Gibson.

  Sawyer also increased the viewership gap over CBS' third-ranked "Evening News with Katie Couric" (6.2 million) to its largest size in 11 months.

  NBC's "Nightly News with Brian Williams" (9.4 million) remains the broadcast news leader.

  Thursday and Friday were excluded from the networks' tallies because of the Christmas holiday and preemptions.

• Diane Sawyer begins at ABC's `World News'

  NEW YORK – Diane Sawyer follows quickly on the heels of Charles Gibson's retirement to launch a new era as anchor of ABC

  News' flagship evening newscast on Monday.

  Sawyer's debut means women now hold two of the three top jobs on what have always been considered the most prestigious newscasts on broadcast TV. Three years ago, CBS' Katie Couric became the first woman to hold the job by herself.

  ABC has deliberately downplayed the transition on "World News." The show's top producer promised minor changes to accompany Sawyer, including the show's first update of on-air graphics in five years and a greater concentration on chat with correspondents to go with Sawyer's more conversational style.

  NEW YORK – Charles Gibson has signed off for the last time from the ABC News anchor desk. He brings 34 years at the netwo

  rk to a close with Friday's edition of "ABC World News."

  He called the job he's leaving "a labor of love."

  Since joining ABC in 1975, he served two stints as co-host of "Good Morning America," was an anchor of the "Primetime" newsmagazine, and tackled numerous assignments as a correspondent. He had anchored "World News" since 2006.

  The 66-year-old Gibson announced his intention to retire several months ago.

  On Monday, his former "Good Morning America" co-host Diane Sawyer will take over anchor duties at "World News" in what is planned as a low-key transition.
