• NBA, NHL finals score solid gains for networks

  LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Sports ruled the latestweek of television ratings, yet Fox still managed to finish ontop, led b

  y its reality programming.

  The NBA Finals on ABC and the NHL Stanley Cup Finals on NBCgave the networks some fresh ratings air, with both franchisesposting significant year-to-year gains.

  The first two games between the Los Angeles Lakers andBoston Celtics won Thursday (13.4 million viewers and a 5.4rating/17 share in the key adults 18-49 demographic) and Sunday(13.5 million, 5.5/16). Thursday's game was up 46 percent, andSunday's match was up 62 percent from last year.

  NBC's final two Stanley Cup playoff games last week mighthave been lower-rated than the basketball games, but theyposted even higher year-to-year increases. NBC tied for secondplace Monday night, with the hockey game up 155 percent (6.3million, 2.8/9), and won Wednesday with the game up 123 percent(6.8 million, 2.9/9).

  Also making headlines last week was the debut of twoscripted series: "Swingtown" (8.6 million, 2.8/8) on CBS and"Fear Itself" (5.3 million, 2.0/6) on NBC. The shows were bothup against the NBA Finals on Thursday night and posted modestpremieres, with "Swingtown" topping "Fear."

  Also premiering last week after a four-year absence wasABC's reality competition series "The Mole" (4.5 million,1.9/5), which hit a series low.

  Overall, Fox won in the key demographic (averaging 6.5million viewers and a 2.5 rating/8 share), led by "Hell'sKitchen" (9.4 million, 4.4/12) and "So You Think You Can Dance"(Wednesday: 9.6 million, 3.7/11). ABC was second (averaging 6.1million, 2.2/7), followed by NBC (5.7 million, 1.9/6). CBSpulled off the trick of being fourth in the demo but winningthe week among total viewers (7.2 million, 1.7/5). The CW wasfourth (1.8 million, 0.7/2).

• NHL sets deals with TSN, Anheuser-Busch

  CHICAGO (Reuters) - The National Hockey League announcedtwo deals on Tuesday, one covering broadcast rights in Canadaand another a

  marketing deal with Anheuser-Busch Cos Inc,believed to be worth $275 million combined.

  The league said it signed a six-year broadcast and digitalrights deal in Canada with sports cable network TSN, which isowned by CTV Inc and Walt Disney Co's ESPN network, that mediareports said is worth at least $200 million.

  The NHL is coming off its third consecutive year of recordattendance following a lockout by owners that eliminated the2004-2005 season. But it has struggled to build a national TVaudience in the United States.

  Its TV ratings are among the lowest of North America'smajor professional sports leagues.

  The NHL's U.S. broadcast rights are held by Comcast Corp'sVersus network and General Electric Co's NBC.

  The agreement with TSN, Canada's No. 1 cable network,starts with the 2008-2009 season and runs through the 2013-2014season, the NHL said.

  Under terms of the deal, TSN secures exclusive Canadian TVrights for national English-language broadcast and digitalcoverage of NHL games.

  TSN, whose relationship with the NHL dates back to 1987,will air 70 regular-season games annually, and all televisedgames will include at least one Canadian team.

  TSN also will air the first three rounds of the Stanley Cupplayoffs, and its digital rights include high-speed broadband,wireless and video-on-demand.

  Audience levels on TSN have increased 32 percent in thelast five seasons, according to the NHL.

  TSN previously owned the NHL national package from1987-1988 to 1997-1998, and from 2002-2003 to 2007-2008.

  The NHL also said it has renewed its marketing agreementwith Anheuser-Busch for Bud Light to remain the league'sofficial beer through the 2010-2011 season. That deal is worthan estimated $75 million, according to media reports.

  The deal includes simultaneous renewals with Anheuser-Buschand Labatt, which distributes Bud Light in Canada.

  Bud Light has been the league's official beer since 1998,and sponsors 21 of the league's 24 U.S. teams.

• NBC renews deal for hockey coverage

  LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Coming off a year of record National Hockey League viewership, NBC has made a deal to

  continue airing professional hockey games through the 2010-11 season.

  The NHL and NBC Sports have agreed to extend their partnership, under which the network doesn't pay an upfront rights fee and instead splits advertising revenue with the league. The link-up began with the 2006 season.

  June's Stanley Cup Final included television's most-watched regular-season hockey game in 36 years, when the deciding Game 7 drew 8 million viewers.

  NBC Sports' coverage has introduced innovations to help increase hockey's TV viewership, which traditionally has been lackluster in the United States compared with other pro sports. An "Inside the Glass" analyst position that stations a reporter between the teams' benches has been lauded as a breakthrough in covering the sport. NBC Sports received a 2009 Sports Emmy Award for its coverage.

  The network's 2010 NHL coverage begins on New Year's Day with the third annual NHL Winter Classic.
