• Jay-Z talks World Series, Broadway and DJ Hero

  NEW YORK – The New York Yankees have been blasting Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" during their playoff run. Now, the team

  is having the rap king perform the song live to kick off Game 1 of the World Series.

  Jay-Z and fellow New Yorker Alicia Keys are set to perform the hit on Wednesday, as the Yankees take on defending World Series champs, the Philadelphia Phillies.

  "Thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee," the Brooklyn native said in an interview Monday.

  He calls the opportunity a "once in a lifetime experience" and says though the jam has become an unofficial New York anthem, he's not pushing for it to be the city's theme song.

  "I'm not pitching it for anything, it's just a song I made for New York City," he said.

  "Really it's about inspiration, it's about hope — I think that's what connects with people. The song connects outside of New York. Every night I play it, there's a monster response, no matter if we're in Providence or whenever."

  The 39-year-old rapper was busy Monday promoting the new "DJ Hero" video game, out Tuesday. A special edition of the game — "DJ Hero Renegade Edition" — features a turntable controller as well as a two CDs, one from Jay-Z and another from Eminem.

  Jay-Z, who has released eleven albums, says this was an opportunity for him to release his "best of" material.

  "I picked a song from each of my albums. I've never had a greatest hits, so it's pretty much like my greatest hits," he said.

  He also said the new video game may make its players overconfident about their DJ skills in real life.

  "It's very challenging and fun and you get lost and you start believing that you can deejay a party," he laughed. "I think some kids may go out and try to deejay a party and really mess up really bad and realize it's not as easy as it seems."

  Jay-Z will also be getting involved in the Broadway play, "Fela," an Afrobeat musical about the life of Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

  "It's kind of early," he said of his involvement in the musical, which also finds Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith participating.

  "I went to see the play a couple months ago and it was fantastic," he said.

  "Fela" opens Monday, Nov. 23 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

  The legendary comedian will direct a stage version of "Th

  e Nutty Professor," the 1963 film he co-wrote and in which he starred as the nerdy title character.

  The show will feature music by Marvin Hamlisch and a book and lyrics by Rupert Holmes. It is expected to land on Broadway during the 2010-2011 season.

  The 83-year-old Lewis last appeared on Broadway in 1995 in a revival of "Damn Yankees."

• Off-Broadway Sold 3.6 Million in Tickets Between September 2007 and August 2008

  The estimated citywide economic impact is $461.3 million, according to OBA. The group pointed out that Off-Broadway outsold The

  New York Yankees, The Statue of Liberty, Coney Island and The Metropolitan Museum of Art - as well as almost every other major New York City attraction - during the 2007-08 theatre season.

  "The figuresÖreinforce what members of the Off-Broadway community have long suspected," stated Peter Breger, a theatrical attorney who serves as the chair of the OBA. "Off-Broadway is not only a major player in the city's arts and culture scene. Its economic enhancements to the City of New York are on par with - and in many cases, they outdistance - those attractions generally perceived to be among New York's top destinations for locals and tourists alike."

  The figures were calculated based on a compilation of box-office data provided by various Off-Broadway ticketing agencies, producers and theatre managers for the period Sept. 1, 2007 through Aug. 31, 2008. Specific theatres and managers were not named in the announcement.

  The report includes data from many but not all commercial and not-for-profit Off-Broadway productions in theatres with 199-500 seats, plus smaller theatres that are significant in traffic, including Theater Row, DR2, Signature Theater and The Rattlestick. It does not include data from small-venue non-Equity engagements.

  Breger told Variety that the report was as complete as possible, but that some smaller shows were not represented.

  The OBA is "an open forum for Off-Broadway producers, general managers, venue owners, press agents and marketing firms who meet to promote and support Off-Broadway theatre, encourage and assist new producers, plan for the future of the industry, share ideas and network."

  The Off-Broadway Alliance is not to be confused with the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers, "founded in 1959 to foster theatrical productions produced in Off-Broadway theatres, to assist in the voluntary exchange of information among its members, and to serve as the collective voice of its membership in pursuit of these goals."
